When I was a kid, my parents talked about: Values, morality, virtue, integrity, truth, liberty, honor, justice, responsibility, and the American way. And to love and pray for your spouse, family, God, veterans, police, and even the jerk neighbor. And to respect the American Government.

When the election didn't go the right way for my parents back then, they said:

"Respect the President, son, no matter that we didn't vote for him. The nation spoke. He is Our President". My mom cried when JFK was shot, and she was a staunch republican that did not vote for him.

Now, these days: The left are so far off of center that it comes down to having a nation or not.

It's a good time to be old.
By definition, both the left and right wings are far off center. Only centrists are “on center.”

Until we get the Money out of electoral process…special interests (other than the voters) will heavily influence elections. It’s also time to get rid of the electoral process, IMO.

The “poll” taxes…(we never taxed the Poles)… were onerous and illegal. Every lawful citizen regardless of economic-position has the right to vote…. Rights should not be taxed…. and back when Poll Taxes were enforced they did what they were intended to do….Discourage poor people from voting.
Same thing with “Literacy Tests”. Kinda interesting the only people who had to take the “test” of guessing how many jelly-beans were in the jar were minorities. (and guessing the quantity of beans doesn’t test “literacy” anyway…. plus the only people who had to take the test was arbitrarily decided by the poll-worker…not universally applied. It was despicable.

There is One Truth which still exists: It is up to US to decide the next election. Sitting around griping and listening to liars without calling them “out” will only hurt the process. The only way evil succeeds is for good people to remain quiet when they see the evil.… and pointing out the lies is our responsibility.

There was no change to the election attributable to “voter fraud” or rigged elections or voter machine error or manipulation. Period!

At the top of the hill at Pitcher Mountain
Rusty they had 40 or 50 head of Buffalo now.
Still a herd of scotisth long hair cows up on the mountain there, but now Buffalo fenced near the road.
The people that own the Scotch Highlander cattle bought out a herd of Buffalo from another local farmer in Langdon, NH, (just down the road from Bascoms Sugarhouse) last summer when the owner retired.

By definition, both the left and right wings are far off center. Only centrists are “on center.”
Years of apathy and non-participation of the political center have resulted in only the extremists participating which has caused both entrenched parties to move very, very far off center. Fifty years ago both of those entrenched parties were a whole lot closer to center and thus they were able to act civilly and work together to find common ground and move the country forward.

Today with the parties so far off center there are no viable centrist candidates to vote for. With the echo chambers of socialist media, those even a bit off center in either direction have their biases so reinforced that they can no longer engage in civil debate with anyone with differing opinions. To those on either side, you are either with them or you must be against them and on the other wing. They cannot comprehend someone being in the center at all.

I have no idea how we can get out of this mess, since that would require electing candidates who are closer to center to work back to where the parties used to be, and such candidates simply do not exist. I think that a Halley/Scott ticket (in either order) would be viable and much more moderate, but clearly such an option is not going to be put forward and the choice between two extremes will continue.

JFK couldn't even make a showing, much less win the 2024 Dem primary . Your mom sounds like a solid citizen and good judge of character ,I would love to have known her.

Nor could Reagan be the 2024 Republican nominee.

Contrary to some of the opinions expressed I believe real progress has been made on improving America. Sometimes its easy to think back to 'the good old days' and think they were so wonderful. Maybe not so much for some.
While I respect those that came through really hard times as kids, I would proffer that it would be really nice if no one had to endure those hardships going forward.
I found a very good article HERE that is worth the read. You might not agree with all but that's ok. The USA is a great experiment. There will be times where it's one step forward, two back. All told it's a great experiment. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

There have certainly been real improvements over the past 50 years, however the great division and inability to have any rational civil debate that has really peaked in the last decade or so is also threatening to undermine those improvements.

Project JFK into today with his platform would run as a Republican and have a good chance of winning.
