Neighbor tipped his on its side in the ditch. It was right after he purchased it, and was still getting used to the controls and size and zigged when he should have zagged.

Thankfully his didn't tip on him. Just slid down and wedged into the other side of the ditch.

He was pretty embarrassed when he had to call his son to bring the truck over.

This guy just died last week in PA. On ZT to retrieve his mail. He wasn't even mowing at the time.

Didn't even roll it. Here's the cause:

Sometime in the past, though, the emergency cutoff switch under the seat of the mower was disabled, according to PSP.

He disabled the switch, and when he got off the mower, it ran him over.

People treat these safety switches as an annoyance but many times those "nannies" have saved people from their own carelessness and stupidity. Bypassing them to test is reasonable, permanently bypassing instead of making a proper repair isn't.

Manufacturers do the best they can to make these things Monkey Proof, but then society just keeps making better Monkeys.

There must be more to the story. My guess is that he grabbed a motion handle to assist him in dismounting and the disabled safety couldn't kill the engine.

I look at it a bit different then others. He had health problems. He was 79. He probably removed the wire from the operator presence switch because he had trouble getting it started. So how much longer would his life have lasted? May have very well ended in a hospital attached to every devise available waiting for someone to say, "Ok enough".

Ok, so one bypasses the nanny switch. Personal choice or perhaps waiting for a replacement part -- whatever the reason: this likely won't happen if the machine is shut off before dismounting. Also a personal choice.

Choose wisely.
