I was reading another thread related to the purchase of a tractor with something like 100 hours on it, that developed serious problems within minutes of delivery.

It got me thinking about my feelings of trusting people.

Before I met my wife, after spending four years in the military, if you can count the US Coast Guard as the military, BUT I did spend a year in South East Asia in the USCG, if that matters...anyway, after ending my four year commitment, I took my old BMW motorcycle on a passenger carrying freighter to Spain, and embarked on a long trip from Europe to Asia. At the end of a year and a half of traveling I met a Japanese woman who would end up being my wife. now just months away from 50 years of marriage, on a train in Russia, after crossing Russia on the Trans Siberian RR in December. A time when everything out the windows was white, LOL.

Anyway, after getting married, and settling down in Japan for a while, I was still distrustful of people. I had met masters of deception when traveling in many foreign countries.

A Japanese friend of the new wife needed to borrow some small amount of money. Something like $500 at the time. I was very hesitant, and basically said how can be be sure the friend is honest and will return the loan?

Concept was foreign to the wife. I accepted her appraisal and we lent the money. It naturally came back shortly.

I then reassessed my position of what human nature was like. Lived too long on the dark side I guess.

Now I do trust people, but still have an understanding it pays to be careful when dealing with people I don't know personally.

My guess is people here at OTT learned this lesson quicker than I did.

Edit: forgot to add that during my travels I was ripped off by the best of them, and I appreciate the lesson...LOL... it never amounted to more than an few bucks, but when living on a dollar a day that meant something. But still worth the price of membership...

MOST people are honest....but it only takes 1% of the population to sour you on the rest.

Just about the time I am in "bah-humbug" mode, along will come some super nice person to restore my faith in humanity,

I agree with Ve9aa ............ most are honest, but the one or two people that screwed you will always be remembered!

Funny thing with leading money ............ always assume you'll never get it back and you will never be disappointed!

of that 1% though, 99.4% are the politicians.

In the 50-55 years of helping people out, probably 150-200 with money loans , only TWO have ever stiffed me, maybe that's good ?

In general, I do not trust people, and generally expect the worst from them.
When I get the worst from them, I'm usually ready for that.
When they are not AHs, I am pleasantly surprised, and faith is (at least temporarily) restored.
I am happy to report, probably 95% surprise me, and I remain happy most of the time.

We were up in Montana and the guy that owned the place we were renting asked for cash if we had enough…he offered a 200 dollar per week discount. Wifey was super concerned about the guy and if he even owned the cabin…

the comment she made to him was an eye opener. she says…I am from California (we were both born and raised there….60 years)…where EVERYBODY is trying to rip you off.

it was never that way until the last 15-20 years…but we are getting tired of the crap.

OP…trust is earned…once lost…hard to regain.

Don't ever loan money to a friend before you decide which one is more important to you!

When it comes to trusting people, I do. I can usually discern real quick in a conversation if someone is honest and truthful. BSers have certain mannerisms about them. It's a skill learned from having 10 rentals for many years!!

I do. Of course, I also pray for wisdom and discernment. I believe, through experience, that the majority of people that I encounter are honest. I also believe that I can be careful, and still initially trust someone. I don't want to live life always doubting people. I'd rather be disappointed once in a while, and pleased most of the time.

If I loan money on a handshake (usually to in-laws) I never expect to see it again but have been pleasantly surprised a few times. If it would destroy the relationship to lose the money, I’m not loaning it.

For business matters I have generally found even with those I trust, good contracts make for good relationships; both on the business side and maintaining the personal side. Agree on responsibilities, authority levels, when money is due, who it’s due to, how much money is due, and how it’s to be paid. Spell it all out and if there’s disagreement later, a good written agreement, whether loan note or corporate operating agreement, reminds everyone what the agreement is. If there’s an agreement to change it, change it; but until it’s changed, it is what it is.

My family ran a family owned business for a couple decades. We modified the structure as needed to meet changing circumstances but having strong, clear agreements on corporate structure and the leases with our commercial tenants set the boundaries to keep everyone in their lane and avoid undue conflict.

Once in a while, one particular person would decide they were in charge of everything and we’d have to politely say, “Please refer to paragraph C.3.a.ii on page 4 of the Operating Agreement and slow your roll so we don’t have to enact the provisions of paragraph E.2 through 5 on page 11 to kick your butt to the curb, because we truly like and value you but ain’t putting up with this.” Then we’d all read the contract and get back to normal.

But for clear negotiated operating agreements, no way we could have maintained the business for as long as we did. (Sold it a few years ago.) That said, if I didn’t trust them I wouldn’t be in business with them at all.

Buying a used piece of equipment from a stranger? I wouldn’t trust most people to know what’s wrong with it much less trust them to disclose it. If you aren’t competent to assess that yourself, it would be advisable to engage someone competent to check it out or buy from a dealership rather than an individual. One reason for that is the not uncommon situation of equipment being sold because it hasn’t been used in a LONG time and it’s a “it ran when we parked it” scenario. Also, the person selling it may have little knowledge of it if inherited or they’ve only put a few hours on it. The engine may start and run for a couple minutes but there’s a lot more to checking it out than that.

Sometimes you get screwed because people lie. Sometimes you get screwed because the other person is honest but incorrect. Either way when you find “glittery oil” in your new L4701 like the guy in the post that probably inspired this thread, the repair bill isn’t any different.

Yes, I’m conscripted to watch Married At First Sight with the wife this evening, thus the long post. 🙂

I don't know how long ve9aa has been a 'ham' but I've been licensed for more that 60 years. In that time I've never been disappointed by another ham. That includes the time many years ago when we went on vacation to St Lucia. I brought a portable ham station with me to operate. Ham equipment was very heavily taxed there (100%) and one of the locals wanted to buy mine. The local currency (ECC's as I remember) were worthless outside the Eastern Caribbean Countries. He promised in a month or so he would be in the states and send me the $$$ then. It was a deal. 6 weeks or so later I had my $$$.
I always try to think the best of people. When it comes to lending money to an acquaintance, relative or friend I always assume I'll get it back but am comfortable if that doesn't happen.

Many are honest, but like others here its the few that made us decide to not let the snowmobile trail go right next to the Hunting camp.
