The one we had was 20 years ago. Didn't have the guard for the occupant. Easy to use. Flip a lever for free spool to wind. Could leave the pto engaged. When you want to wind it, you just grab a chain the was hooked to a lever. Pull on the chain would engage the clutch and it would spool it in. Had to watch it though. Was fast has hell.Thats the cadillac of skidder attatchments, built in winch. Very nice unit.
Straps are by far safer.....only problem is that they cut, rub, chafe, absorb oil, grit and all the little things that cause it to break down slowly over time. Anytime a load it pulled on, check a strap end to end.I'm curious as to why multiple people think a strap is safer. I personally wouldn't consider using a strap unless it would always be suspended and not dragged. I've seen what a dragged strap looks like and it becomes junk. Just curious about the safety aspect
