Bush hog replacement

I'm getting up in age, had 80th in April. The old Frontier RC2048 was bought about 8 to 9 years ago when I bought the lemony JD 1025R. Had it on the 2025R for 6 years and now on B2601.

The bolts for the blades have raised elongated nipples that are supposed to fit into slots on the bush hog thing they attach to but have both gotten to where they slip over a bit and require tightening of the nut through its entire range and then nuts loosening and pounding on the bolt with nut on it to get the bolts out.

The rear lip is bent from being backed into things. The case has numerous dents.

No seal leakage on the gearbox. Replaced the oil once.

Thinking about getting another Frontier or Landpride. JD dealer is actually closer. May go with another Frontier. Like it. MUCH better than the JD LX4 I had with the 1st tractor. The stump jumper stays in place with blade removal. The gearbox oil does not heat up like it did on the LX4.

What to do with the old Frontier? Trade in with new one? Take to metal recycle after removing gearbox oil?

Any other recommendations? Think I'm looking at $2,000.

Well, around here I would be tempted to drop it at the local auction and take what I could get for it. My guess is you will get more than scrape value. I don't know if you would get more than trade in value, depends on the dealer.

We have taken several things to auction and it always amazes me what people will buy and how much they will pay for it. The last item we took was an old, rusted up hog feeder with a few of the lids missing on it and rust holes, which I was going to take to scrap yard with other stuff. Dad wanted to try to sell it, so to the auction it went and it sold for $280 which was way more than scrape and after dad paid his fees, he still walked away with over $250. I guess if the person really needed the feeder, they got deal to because a new one would sell for over $3,000. A little tlc and elbow grease with the old one and I'm sure it would be a good feeder once more.

Sounds like it needs new blades, bolts and blade hub, stump jumper or what ever you want to call it.
That's what I did to mine last time I rebuilt it in 2018. I spent around $400 on it.

Agreed.

Blade bolts should be changed each time the blades are removed but few do so.

I always remove blades and bolts upon buying a new cutter to apply anti sieze to components in anticipation of future service.

I have owned many rough cut mowers over the years, and currently own a Frontier RCR2060 as well as 3 Woods.

Not at all fond of the Frontier and will not buy another.

If mine, I wouls sell it myself upon replacement with a Woods, BH or LP.

I guess my first thought is if not interested in doing the repairs / TLC yourself, is it worth asking a dealer or someone else to do for some walking around cash? If there is no value left in it to you, then my thought would be sell it for what you can. Before scrap it, ask if local JVS is interested or has a kid that wants to repair it for some cash. Then maybe split the sale or some portion of it with the kid or not. Or maybe donate it to the JVS if there is interest and see if you can claim as a deduction in taxes. That’s my thought.

Joint vocational school (could be a high school or post high school program). I am not sure your area has those or not. Sometimes the believe you can donate a car or something and maybe get a tax credit or something? Some states have these or something similar sprinkled across the state in multiple counties.
