Broke pin BH-77

I rekon I tried to do something that this hoe shouldn’t do but maybe it was a faulty pin. This is a BH77 mounted to my 2014 l3800. I don’t use it often but last weekend It broke the pin holding the boom to the dipperstick and when it broke it tweaked the ears that the pin goes through. Any ideas on how to bend them back it’s not of much I was thinking a porta power don’t want to have to take it completely apart. Maybe a block of wood and a sledgehammer any thoughts? See pics

I might try the largest bolt I could find that would fit through the holes, and tighten the nut on the end (using large flat washers of course) to hopefully pull them back together.

Are they both bent or just one?

I’m not sure I like the idea of using a BFH…

I can't tell from the pics, but if it's just "tweaked" a little, a sledge hammer might be worth a try.

Another, probably better solution, would be to take it to an automotive "body shop".

I have seen them straighten some seriously twisted metal before.

Those guys are good, I bet this would be "childs play" to them.


EDIT: I am amazed that the pin actually broke. It must have had some defect in the center of it.

Other than a porta power or similar, strong bolt(s) and thick steel to compress it.

I wouldn't want to try to use 1 side to help move alignment the other side.
If me my solution would be to square and move if needed each side independently.

Why.... I saw something similar a few years back that tried to move 2 pieces into alignment with a sudden/drastic movement of only 1 side making things much worse.

Work on 1 side at a time. Red Greene fix would be to use a hydraulic jack or Jack-All braced or chained to an immovable object like a much larger vehicle, etc.... but never both tangs at same time.

Don’t remember the serial number break but there was a recall on that exact pin if you want to check with your local dealer

Big just figured it out but I’m not already ordered me some 3/4 inch threaded rod some thick square washers and thick round washers gonna try to pull it in it appears one side is worse than the other

Why wouldn't you first consider if your tractor is one of those that had an engineering fault and see if it could be fixed by the dealership as suggested in post #7?

Wow that looks like a "cast pin".

In the "gun industry" there are parts that are called MIM (Metal Injection Molded....I think)

I broke a MIM part before and it looked very similar to that pin, but a hell of a lot smaller.

Does anyone know if those pins are forged, cast, ....etc?

Yep it’s me it is the second one in same location I talked to jaybird and he told me threaded rod so I’m going to try that 3/4 all threaded rod and pull it back together

you'll have to determine which side is 'good' and secure that one to an immovable object THEN try the threaded rod trick.
if you don't secure the good side, tightening the rod may bend the good side towards the bad.

when I do this , I tighten a full turn, then pause for 10-15 seconds, repeat until it's parallel, then do it 2 more times, then go have lunch, 1/2 hr later, come back and undo the nuts on rod, measure. It may take 1-2 more turns to get parallel as the steel will 'bounce back' a bit.

hmm, maybe swinging the boom with a very heavy uneven load in bucket ,then stopped PDQ ??
Pondering HOW the pin broke in the center. In theory,no real 'load' there as outer ends of pin support weight.
