Now I need a bit of info here guys and gals. I got the soil test back again from Penn State Ag, this time times were right. Anyways as it turns out they still say I need 9000 pounds of lime per acre, ( 22.5 tons)yeah I know thats a bunch for 5 acres. I want to plant something with next year. As you know lime aint cheap and I really dont want to waste any more than I have to, I figure disk then lime and then again in the fall and then spring. Hence the question a drop bottom or a broadcast type spreader. Anyway ya look at it its not going to be cheap or fun, and I contacted the local farm supply dealer and he said that he couldnt get to it till late summer with his spreader truck. Anyways kids, what say you?

I don't have an answer for you, but I do know lime is very heavy and not all spreaders can handle that.

My advice is pelletized use broadcast spreader, powdered use drop.

Does the county extension service have a spreader to use? I would call the other ag supply dealers. I can not believe he is that busy. It should not take but a couple of hours out of his day to spread a truck load of lime.

I would find a fertilizer plant that does custom spreading with a truck and have them come in and spread it for you. That’s a lot to spread otherwise. The ones around here do that. The charge to spread is not too bad when you are buying the lime from them.

I use pelletized in my ptp spreader. Ag lime has to be spread with the right equipment because it's fine and cakes up.

Is pelletized the same ratio? 9,000 X 5 pounds of pellitized would be very expensive.

It does need to be applied as quickly as possible because, as you know, lime takes a while to break down and do any good.
