I know I’m getting old, and know I’m grumpy. But is anyone else frustrated with bacon these days? More so, the grocery store brands. They are cutting the stuff thinner than tissue paper! Then they can spread the slices out to make it appear as though the package contains as much as it did years ago! And it sure appears as though there is less red meat and more white fat in their ”quality products perfected over the last 75 yrs”. Haven’t been overly happy from butcher shops either lately.

I always buy thick cut. If I can't find it, I go for the breakfast sausage. 😋

Yeah - you have to pay attention to the 16 oz vs the 12 oz versions ......... I picked up several packages thinking I was getting a bargain ..... then looked ... only 12 oz!!! No bargain at all.

The doctor told me to stop smoking and to stop eating bacon because it was bad for my health. I told him that I have it all figured out. I will smoke the bacon first, and then it will be cured so I can eat it and be healthy.

How much bacon do you want. We are overrun with 'bacon' down here. Happy to send as many as you want...up your way. ;)

Buy bacon at the butcher counter, not the pre-packaged stuff. They usually have thick cut and meatier bacon. And it’s often cheaper that the packaged stuff.

I may be in the minority here but I actually prefer thin, crispy bacon. I like when it just kinda crumbles. Some of the thicker stuff is often like eating beef jerky or it will be cooked so its so hard it will about chip my teeth. Ive just never enjoyed thick bacon as well as well cooked thin sliced bacon. I do agree with your larget sentiment though that it seems EVERYTHING these days is being reduced in quantity as the price is increasing, and then its marketed to look as though nothing has changed.

Buy pork belly, make your own bacon. Slice it as thick as you like. A bit of a chore, but sooo worth it.

Really not that much work if you do a dry cure. You can cut the belly in half and cure it in a couple 2 gal zip lock bags or just wrap it in plastic wrap. After a week take it out and cold smoke if you want. Rinse before smoking or cutting. Get it really cold before slicing. Makes it a ton easier to get the thickness you want.

Not sure if you have them up North, but we have a couple Amish Markets within 30 miles.

They’re known for some good meat/deli products here. Always see bacon in their service case.

We get bulk chicken products. 40# cases.

Great replies guys! Yes, I have been buying from a butcher as well. Grocery store is a little more convenient due to my location. So my own fault. Grocery store stuff is so dang thin you can’t get it out of the packaging without the slices looking like they been thru a paper shredder!. Then I see their dang commercials on tv advertising their company history and perfection of their product…drives me nuts. ….

About 50 miles to an Amish market from here. We go every month or two. Thick sliced applewood smoked bacon is great. Maple bacon is good too.
