B7100HST Engine Hydraulic Fluid/oil

After reading through the HST's Operator Manual, couldn't figure out if the tractor's hydraulic system (attached to the engine block) runs on the engine's oil or has its own closed oil system. Anyone know if the engine hydraulic pump uses the engine oil or its own oil?


If it is a closed system and uses its own oil, what kind of fluid/oil does it use? Figure it needs changing.

The operator manual should give type and quantity of hydraulic fluid as well as engine oil. It should also tell the location of the respective filters and how to check fluid levels. It even gives recommended oil change frequency, which is more often for engine oil than it is for transmission / hydraulic fluid.

Your tractor has oil in the engine. Needs to be replaced with oil specified for diesel engines, and recommended filter ( I prefer Kubota).

Your tractor has a hyd. system with it's own filter. I'd suggest Kutota SUDT2 fluid. It's the best their is for your hydro system.

The engine uses 10W-30 diesel engine oil and does not share that with any other system. It has a spin-on filter on the left side of the engine. Dipstick for the engine oil is beside the filter.

The hydraulic system uses UDT compatible hydraulic oil and shares the sump with the hydrostatic transmission. There is a spin-on filter underneath the cover at the base of the steering column and a pair of filter screens incorporated into the suction pipe banjo bolts at the bottom of the sump, one on either side of the tractor. (One feeds the HST pump, the other feeds the auxiliary hydraulic pump). The dipstick and filler cap are located on top of the transmission case, at the base of the seat.

While you have that cover off, drain and fill the steering box at the base of the steering column with gear oil.

Speaking of gear oil, don't forget the front axle. There are 3 separate drain and fill locations -- one at each wheel and one in the centre. All of them take about 1/2 litre of 80W-90 GL-4 or better gear lube.

you might find this useful, from my 1997 B7100hst owners manual.

My manual specifies 13.5 liters or 3.6 US gallons.

Keep in mind the manual for this tractor was written 22 years ago, products names etc may have changed or modern alternatives might be a better choice.

Torch - aside from referring to the Operating Manual for the amount of gear oil for the front diff (0.5L), how else does one check the gear oil level to determine if the diff fluid is hi/low?

There should be a dipstick on top of the differential housing.

Mine doesn't have any dipsticks on top of the axle or front differential, just fill ports. Remove the plug and fill to the top.
