B7100 Temp Gauge

Put a small temperature gauge on my 7100HST to watch the radiator , but really don't like the kink, has anybody got something better? mowing and plugging up the front screen and getting so hot that you hear boiling bothers me, had to clean screen 6 times Friday mowing, went up to 245, that's hot and I'm worried about blowing the head gasket!

Is there enough space in the horizontal or vertical side of the radiator hose to splice that in? If not, maybe a copper X female T trimmed down on both ends leaving just enough room to slide the hose over and get a clamp on. Where did you get that temp gauge setup? I've been worrying about the same thing but have not noticed any boiling even running it wide open brush cutting.

I see a problem there in pic 1 - by adding the second hose the water now has to flow uphill - and in a thermosyphon system - gravity is a beauch !

Take the second piece of hose (flex)off and cut where I have marked on the original hose and then stick it back on the way it came - cut enough hose out to allow the tabs to make up the distance.

I cut some VERY high grass today (3 feet tall) on my 7100 - had to clean the screen 6 times and it never got too overheated.

I have bought a new hose from Messicks to do exactly what you have done- but just get rid of the second hose - I think you will see the temps fall a bit !!!

I did have it in only one hose but it leaked because the blue adapter is long and wont let you take the bend.

I looked at my factory hose - and I thought the same thing - by the time a cut the hose (twice) I would kink somewhere in the process. I think I have the original hose that has the braided outside too. SO I spent 10 bucks and bought a replacement hose - even though it is the same hose - it seems to be a little "less" long in the 90 degree bend. SO I am hoping to do exactly what you have done.

I have done this to all 3 of my B7100s. Get a new factory hose and cut it like the others have said. It will work.

Ah found the adapter on ebay would anyone be able to tell me the the size for it to fit the hose...just saves me time taking it apart

I got the gauge and the blue connector all from amazon....
total cost was right around 20 bucks.....

make sure the gauge and the fitting on the T are the same!

make sure you get the right size T too.......

I'm going to add an alarm to mine. I have the factory temp gauge but it's an approximate only. I'm going to alarm the darned thing so I know if the overflow is boiling...

Anyone ever braze a brass temp well in the top radiator tank before? That what I was thinking of doing... I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as it in the top tank where the warmest water will be... I'm a bit nervous braise the brass tank is thin and the temp wells I have kicking around are about SCH 40 thickness. I'm afraid of melting the tank brass brass before the temp well will get hot enough for the rod to stick.

After some searching, I found a few good options. A 3/8" aluminum female Weld bung. I think I'll order a few and try it out on my old radiator first. Hell if anything I could solder it with some silverbright, I think it will be too hot for 50/50 lead...

Just a thought, I used JB Weld to bond a brass adapter to a steel plug.

I have the same worries hookie but I'm confident I can do it. I'll practice it on the old radiator I have, the one in my tractor now is brand new. I've soldered and brazed all different kinds of things including a radiator cap housing that blew off an old jeep I used to have. Soldered that bad boy back on on the side of the road lol. But that was soldering two things of the same thickness, it gets tricky when one is super thin and the other is thick, even heating is key. Some people use oxy/acetylene for brazing, I use straight acetylene which I have different size tips for flame size.

Just need to find a gauge and sending unit, I'll see what I can find on eBay.

Othumpa, is that where the freeze plug is? I wonder if that is a good place to have it... I would think in the 7100 with the open symphonic system, the hottest reading would be near the top of the motor or radiator... But you guys know more about these tractors than I do, that's just my thinking in it...

The more I look at that pic it looks to be near the top of the motor. I'll take a look at mine tomorrow and see if I can make that work with a bushing. I'm guessing you used JB because it is metric threads?

I'm almost positive the hose is 1 1/4" ID. which is 32MM.

Olthumpa, on the old L series, at least on my L305, the tapped hole in the head is 16mm x 1.5 thd.

I replaced the old factory electric unit with a mechanical. I bought the fitting at O'Reilly Auto. It was in a bag with 4 other fittings, over near where they sell the gauges. Price was like $9 for the bag.

Cheers 85 Hookie, perhaps I will pop the top hose off and measure it as I have a water pump/alternator on my B7100 not the symphonic system so the top hose is quite short.
