Quick update: I haven't forgotten about this project, in fact I picked up a nice block of aluminium, sufficient to make 5 of them, along with plugs for unused ports (will make them with 6 outlets, so they can be used in any configuration). I was making the final rough cut on #3 of 5 when my trusty 25 year old bandsaw motor fried itself. Things are on hold temporarily until I get that replaced.

Update: got my motor swapped out and am back in the metal cutting business.

The first of my version of the "universal" block is done. Dimensions as per the Kubota drawing at the start of this thread (except as noted), 6061-t6 aluminium, 30mm thick (original cover is 25mm, need the extra to accomodate the threads), ports tapped 3/8" NPT. Will come with four stainless 3/8" countersunk plugs rated 3,000psi for unused ports and 2 new o-rings.

While the ports on the face are 35mm apart as shown, the ports on the long side are 32mm separation. This is to ensure sufficient material between the ports and the mounting bolt holes.

The other four blocks are milled, just have to drill and tap them now.



Material cost including plugs and o-rings works out to about CDN$20. Plus something to heat the shop and run the machines. Call it CDN$30 (or US$25) + actual shipping by Canada Post from P1H 2J4. (Note: I don't know how much Dan wants for his, but shipping in the US would undoubtedly be cheaper -- Shipping in Canada is nuts.)

One per person for now, just to make sure there's enough to go around.

Shipping to and from Canada isn't terrible. I buy and sell a decent amount of chainsaws and parts from the great white north. Last saw I got from up there was a husqvarna 390xp. Cost me $37.00 us to ship. I'd hazard a guess that adapter block would be under the $20.00 mark.

Material is 6061 aluminum with SAE-06 ports and plugs. The one in the picture was made from steel. Port adapters for your hoses available extra. Generally figure $5 each unless they are exotic.

There we go: two great options. Same universal design and material. Choose between 3/8" NPT or SAE O-ring boss -06 ports. Similar pricing (way less than what they were when available from Mother Kubota).

For reference, Canada Post's online tool tells me it would cost CDN $18.35 (about US$15) after taxes and fuel surcharge to ship this to Houston City Hall with tracking. Same parcel to Vancouver City Hall is CDN $24.05. Toronto City Hall is $18.76. Don't ask me to explain CP's pricing rationale!

Wow. That was fast. A lot of pent-up demand I guess. All is not lost, I picked up enough aluminium on my way home from work today to make 6 more. It won't happen overnight, but the blackflies will drive me back under cover in two weeks or so.

Gotta get more plugs and o-rings anyway.

BTW: if you are planning a project, best to buy your metal now. My supplier advises there will be big hikes in the near future due to the impact of fuel prices.

Oh, one thing that I don't think has been explicitly mentioned and applies to both Dan's and mine equally:

These blocks intercept the flow of hydraulic oil between the pump and the 3ph. They MUST only be used in combination with an end-user supplied connection between the left and right halves, such as a properly plumbed FEL control valve, power steering control, etc. Failure to connect something between the ports will result in a rapid loss of hydraulic fluid. You can pick any two ports and plug the others but installing plugs in ALL the open ports will result in rapid and potentially catastrophic failure of the hydraulic system.

At the very minimum, you must install a hydraulic hose between any port on the left and any port on the right halves before cranking the engine.

I would think this is self-evident, but I don't know the skill level of those that are planning to get one. If you are in doubt, as for help. If you ignore the above you will have my sympathy and a broken tractor.

I can tell you for sure - it is not self-evident. I had someone ask for two extra plugs..

Put a BIG warning notice in the box along with the with the block.

Yea what happens, if it doesn't stall the engine out first, is it pops the Hydraulic pump seal right out of the back of the pump, and fills the engine with hydraulic fluid, not the end of the world but a hassle to fix!
But I've also seen it break the fuel cam or the drive on the pump, that gets really costly, really quickly!

Yeah, I guess I should have put a warning on the boxes before shipping.

Ok, one other thing I thought was self-evident: Clean things well before removing the old cover and installing the new. You don't want contaminants entering the system.

I took care to spray down the entire block inside and out with brake cleaner to remove all oil residue before blowing them out thoroughly with dry compressed air to ensure they are completely free of foreign contaminants, metal chips, etc. Then I vacuum sealed them for shipping. Spool valves are precision machined, o-rings and seals are easily damaged. Dirt is death to hydraulics. Be equally conscientious when installing things.
