Hi, the old B6100 started-up just fine this morning, then I turned it off to open a gate and it won't even try.

Battery 13.4 volts.
Cleaned posts and cable clamps.
Same 13.4 volts at the starter, cleaned the stud and wire ends.
Continuity between posts on the starter switch when turned to "start".
Cleaned the starter switch wire terminals and lugs.
Jumped the wires going to the switch that's actuated when the clutch is depressed.

The starter never showed any signs of laboring, always cranked strongly, now I turn the key and it's as if the battery isn't even there. No sound whatsoever.

Is it possible that the starter just died completely?

What am I missing?

Many thanks for any ideas.

Any lights when you turn the key on?
Make sure it's out of gear, wheels chocked, fuel shut off pulled, use a jumper from the main battery lead on the starter solenoid to the small spade terminal on the solenoid and see if it wants to crank.

Hi, thanks. I'm sorry for the slow reply, I just got a chance to try that.

But I misremembered what you wrote and I jumped between the large contacts instead. That caused the starter to spin without activating the solenoid (of course) and then, when I turned the ignition key, it cranked

Thanks!

Re: B6100 started great, now won't - now does but won't move.

Okay - since it started when I jumped the +cable to the small spade terminal on the solenoid, I reasoned that it was a starter switch problem. I ordered a new, OEM switch and installed it - no difference, still wouldn't start.

So I wired a momentary switch between those two terminals and it starts! Yay!

But the tractor won't move. Is there some kind of electric interlock that disables the HST? I've never had any transmission problems and it was working a week ago.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds like a safety switch has gone bad. I would assume that it is the operator presence switch under the seat is bad or not getting activated.

Some tractors have two switches (I think) one in the seat and another one underneath.

If you bypass the safety switch for testing be very careful, put it in neutral to start it, chock wheels, etc

Tractors love to hurt and maim people

You machine is very similar to the B7100 - which does not have a seat safety switch but DOES have a clutch safety switch! SO - this will give you the dead stick that you are feeling, and IF this is not working (easy fix) then the tractor will NOT start.

AS for not moving - I am thinking you are out of "gear" the high/low range is caught in the middle between the two.

Yes, you nailed it: I bumped it into neutral - operator boneheadedness!
And this old tractor doesn't seem to have any safety features, electrical or otherwise. Fortunately, I installed a ROPS when I bought it because it was a rollover that seemed to precipitate, or coincide with, the recent weirdness. I'm using it for the first time since I rolled it and side hills that never used to bother me feel newly dangerous.
So I stopped and will move the rear wheels to their widest position.

Oddly, now the new ignition switch works sometimes, and other times I have to use the momentary switch that I installed.

Thanks, everybody, for your help.
