My sister has asked me to build a counterweight for her husbands B2601 for a surprise gift that she wants to give him. What would be a good weight for this tractor. I built a 600 lbs one for my L2501 but im wondering if I need to go that heavy for the smaller tractor. I built mine out of concrete but I am thinking of building his out of steel just for ease of adding options like shovel holders and a receiver hitch kind of stuff. That way he can fill it with sand or rocks or whatever he wants for the weight.

i had 500lb for counterweight with loaded tires on my 2601... never hurt it or took anything away from it at all.

there were still times that i had enough on the forks in the front that it was light in the back.

the L2501 is a little heavier tractor, but the b2601 actually has a stronger hydro system with more lift capacity..... & pretty much the same engine power.

For comparison, I keep a LP grader scraper hanging off the rear when I’m doing any front lifting work. Whether it’s with the bucket or grapple.

My grader weighs 511#, per LP website, and I have a third cutting edge on the back side. Figure 550# plus dirt and Quick hitch? Point is, a lot of that ~600# is quite a ways behind the 3-pt, so it would be the equivalent of more weight in a weight box that is tighter to the rear end.

With a heaping 60” scoop of quarry rock (~2,700# per yard), I wouldn’t want any less counter weight. The rear tires always stay down, but you certainly know their is less weight on them... my tractor is a B2650 with loaded R4s. A little heavier than the 2601, but not much.

My suggestion would be to build a box that can be added to for tool holders, and carry enough sand weight to max out the 3-pt capacity. If your BIL doesn’t need it full, he can always run it 1/2 or 3/4 full. Top it off if he ever needs max weight out back!
