I’m in the market for a 14’ / 14k dump trailer for my hobby farm. Kaufman by far has the lowest prices but I don’t know how much of that is the factory direct factor vs the build quality factor.

anyone here own a Kaufman dump trailer that can give me some insight into their durability?

thx

I owned a 16', and I am on my second Kaufman gooseneck trailer. They are a good value. I've had no issue with any of the 3. We used the dump trailer to move horse manure, and sold it because my dad prefers a dump truck (shorter for maneuvering). I sold the first gooseneck when we bought a backhoe; it was rated at 14,000, so I bought the same trailer but rated at 24,000 lbs (taller main rails, duals vs singles). No question, I would buy more Kaufman equipment, if needed. I live about 2 1/2 hours from the NC facility, so driving there was an easy decision. They are very professional, and personable.

The only thing I see with Kaufman's is the paint seems to fall off them, I have a 15 old Sure-trac 10K 18ft Utility and the pain still looks good for it's age.
I'm looking at adding a Sure-trac dump 14K 12fft later this year or if the Snow every melts up here . LOL

Several folks I know have or had Kaufman trailers and they all had the same problem the finish didn't hold up and fell off. One had a dump trailer and it was just too light weight built for what he does which is flat concrete work. He sold it. Another friend still has his dump trailer and other than repainting it the trailer has stood up to his use which is mostly hauling firewood and gravel. Several have Kaufman flat beds and they have stood up pretty well other than the finish.

I have a couple of PJ dump trailers including a 16ft tandem axle and a 10ft single axle. I've pulled both behind both tractors and I'm not a fan if pulling off the drawbar which is the best way. These trailers have short A-frame type tongues which limit turning radius due to the lower links contacting the tongue when turning. It's really annoying to be honest. I have a CargoPro aluminum trailer with a long box tube for the tongue and it's much better behind the tractors.

If this is a dedicated farm trailer you could look at Berkelman's Welding and their trailers which are designed to be pulled behind a tractor.

They must not sell them out here, I looked at all that were available locally- LoadTrail, IronBull, PJ, PlayCraft, CarryOn, TexasPride, BigTex, etc..
It looks good, the only thing I saw was the frame rails are bigger on my LoadTrail, but it is also a little less expensive than mine. Mine also has a .100 thk deck, could not find any info on the Kaufman deck.
Don't know about your planned uses, but I :love:love:love: my threeway tailgate.

Kauffman offers two different bed thicknesses. I haven't had any paint fall off of my trailers. It chips, which any paint will do, but nothing is peeling or falling off.

Well, on the way home google maps told me that there was a “stalled vehicle” ahead. It turned out to be a Kaufman dump trailer broken down with someone shoveling the gravel out of it into their pickup truck!

I have a 14' Kaufman Dump trailer that is 3 years old. I have hauled about a dozen loads of mulch, another dozen loads of gravel, several loads of firewood, and a few loads to the local landfill. It is a nice trailer for homeowner/ light contractor use.
Gravel pitt once loaded 5 tons on it and the trailer handled the weight well and had no problem dumping.
Exterior paint is still perfect (Parked under a shelter) Paint in bed is holding up well. I think it is a good value cost wise. I live close to the Kaufman plant and we see a ton of there trailers being used by contractors.

that's good new as you can easily repair booboos. Powder cost is a HUGE 'pain' to try to fix.
Since we're talking about trailers and the type of finish, I'm going to say that I'm thinking about this very thing at the moment. I'm considering a MT made bumper/brush guard that is available in powder coat which is $375 to $495 depending on the color, but they're also available in bare metal.

I'm leaning towards bare metal and painting it myself so that it'll be easier to maintain or modify, there are more colors available, and it's cheaper.

Kaufman is factory direct from North Carolina or Nebraska. look in either Truck Trader or Equipment Trader and you will find them. They also have a good web page order system. There are some trailer sales places that order Kaufman trailers and re-sell but they are not part of Kaufman. They also ship trailers but pick up is the best deal. Kaufman

That factory direct option is cool! I wish all trailer dealers offered that.

One of the NC plant salesman contacts me every year and checks to see if we are still happy or have any issues, and he sends a Christmas card. He's done both for 10 years now. Their customer service is very personal and excellent.

That's impressive and speaks volumes about the company.

I have three PJ trailers but I've seen their quality plummet over recent years. The last one I bought in '23 is the worst yet in terms of construction quality. The local Kubota dealer bought a PJ gooseneck last summer but it's been back at the trailer dealer for over 2 months with issues.

PJ was bought out by American Trailer Works and merged with Big Tex Trailers and now they seem to care only about profit rather than the quality of the products. I emailed PJ to inform them of the poor welding quality, and missed welds and they never bothered to reply.

I'm going to look at other brands for a gooseneck, and after this thread Kaufman is on my short list.

I've used other brands, and looked at lots of them. Kaufman isn't the best, or the worst. In my opinion, they are an excellent value- for the price, you get a solid trailer with great support.

Same here, and Kaufman does offer an excellent value.

I'm hoping to buy a gooseneck trailer this spring and I like the transparency of Kaufman's website where you can build and compare models and features. The local PJ dealer has a 25k GVWR 30ft (25ft + 5ft) gooseneck with monster ramps, 12k tandem dual axles, 14 ply tires on 16" wheels for $21,250. Building a similar Kaufman trailer with 12k tandem dual axles that come with 16 ply tires on 17.5" wheels is $18,590. So more trailer for less money.

I have to wonder why someone would want 12k axles on a 25k GVWR trailer given the 20% tonque weight rule for goosenecks, but regardless, they're available.

I also am contacted on a regular basis by Kaufman.
I also own a Kaufman 10' utility trailer purchased in 2016 that is a great trailer.
Kaufman also recently opened a trailer service and repair facility in central N.C. to make it easy to purchase parts or get trailers repaired/serviced.
