You need an answering machine or call screener.

You can't trust caller ID anymore, since scammers and spammers have figured out how to spoof it. I've even got calls from myself.

About once a month I get a random call from a real person asking me why I keep calling them. So my number is obviously being used as well.

Yup, I too have gotten calls from myself, and sadly other folks get them too. Thankfully they understand when I explain that my number is being used by those dirtbags.

I get calls from people on occasion wondering why I'm calling them. It's been happening with greater frequency lately. I had to talk to the person in the office about it because they keep giving me the wrong number for our customers 😲😲😲

Besides all the spam & scam calls, (some from my own number) my home phone is 1 digit off from a local biker pub/dive bar. You can guess how many drunks call me on a regular basis.

We can send man to the moon and send Voyager to the outer limits of our solar system but we can't stop scammers and spammers from using our phones.

Bet those are some interesting phone calls 😆😆😆

For a while this girls phone number was extremely similar to mine. I would occasionally get calls with someone looking for her. After so many calls and people verifying the number with me, I learned the girls number.

For the most part I treated it as a joke. Have a laugh with the caller and move on. Said, no you hit 1 instead of a 4.

At one point I got pretty concerned though. I started getting calls from this guy looking for his "Girl". Guy was drunk and would mis-dial the number. Then get pretty demanding about putting her on the phone when I would explain that he called the wrong number.

I finally called the girl up after call number 4 from this guy in 20 minutes one night. I explained my concerns that she needed to get far away from that guy and not look back. Not sure what happened, but after that night I never received another call from someone mis-dialing the number looking for her.

My fax number is one digit off from a local pharmacy fax line. Every so often, I receive misdialed prescriptions. I try to call the prescribing prescription and explain. One doctor got quite upset that I was "fraudulently" intercepting his patient's private information!

Another time, someone transposed two numbers and sent me an employee's personnel file. But that was years ago, they probably just e-mail those now.

When I first got a company cell phone, in the days before routine call screening, I pretty quickly found out my phone number was previously owned by a lady with the same last name as mine who didn’t pay her bills and more recently by a drug dealer named Quan. Took about six months to convince deadbeat’s creditors and Quan’s customers they had the wrong number.

The most persistent of Quan’s customers lost his patience after about his 10th call demanding I get Quan to hook him up. Told him for the 10th time I ain’t Quan. He demanded I tell him what happened to Quan, where was he at, and what was I doing with his phone. At that point I lost my patience as well, told him I killed Quan and took his phone as a trophy. He hasn’t called back.

Screen those calls and let them leave a message. Then call them back and ask them why they're calling you. Inifinite loop

Unfortunately I can't do that.

It's also a work cellphone that I'm using. So avoiding phone calls is a big no no since I'm potentially avoiding a call from a customer or one of their employees.

My website directs potential sawmilling customers to my cell number so whether I recognize the number or not, I have to answer. Screening calls by the area code does not work because they are from everywhere now days. Business cell phones might carry the "home office" area code, or whatever. I just answer them all and I am still in control of the "off button".

One of the larger hospitals in Fort Wayne printed our phone number on literature given to family members of pregnant women so the family members could call directly to the maternity ward when checking on the status of the women. Sure was hard to get a night's sleep till the literature was changed and existing literature out of the system.
