Another battery post (pun intended)

Im confused. Im in need of a new battery for my L3400DT. Ive read that a BCI Group 24 will work but the length on this group seems to be slightly to long. I carefully measured the distance between the brackets that hold the bottom of the battery in place ( "L" shaped metal tabs) at 10 1/8" (257mm). The BCI length dimensions for a group 24 battery are listed at 260 mm (10 1/4"). Thats dang close. Cant find the BCI definition of length. Are the BCI dimensions maximum overall values or what. If this is the case (another pun) then it is entirely possible that the minimum case dimension length may be short enough to fit between the battery base containment brackets. To try to state a little differently, the battery cases overall maximum length could be slightly more than its minimum case length. I fact I think this is the most likely scenario but I hate to order a battery only to find that its an 1/8" to long.
Wadayathink? Anybody put a BCI Group 24 (260mm case length) in a Kubota L3400DT? I live near a small town. Not a lot of places to look but guess i will go to Walmart and measure one of their group 24s and maybe hit one or two auto part stores to see what they have. Not sure I trust calling battery vendor. Trust my own measurements more than some customer service rep.

For my tractor, I just measured the length, width, height and then purchased one that fit those measurements at the local auto parts store. You don't need to focus on the group of battery :D

Shoot....I do that ^^^^^^^^^^^^ with all my cars/trucks/tractors too!
Find the largest CCA I can find along with the cheapest price:D (and that aint always a good thing!)

If it fits....stick it in!:eek::)

Interesting. I've replaced both my Yuhasa's in both my Kuobta's with Group 31T Delphi Starting batteries, 1200 CCA rated.

The Delphi's are slightly smaller in length that thee Yuhasa batteries were bu the same CCA and much less expensive. Think I paid under 100 bucks for each Delphi and they have both been in service fr a couple years now.

The 31T's are screw post (as in commercial big truck batteries) bit I just bought screw on conventional post refits and went with them.

You seem to be missing the point of my post. I have already done some measuring as stated in the post. I live in a small town and my options are limited as far as local acquisition. I can go to local auto parts store or Walmart. Not crazy about Walmart batteries. Have little doubt that my options at local auto parts store would be VERY limited at best. If I knew for sure that group 24 battery would fit I would order an Interstate MT-24. Guess I will drive to Walmart and measure their EverStart Maxx Group 24. If the base measures 10 1/8" or less in length guess I will go that route.

Walmart batteries are made by the same company who makes some car parts branded batteries. (Johnson Controls)

I use interstate batteries at work. I've had the same or better luck with the auto parts store batteries, and the ones from Walmart. Better price at the auto parts stores.

The super start battery in my tractor is 5 years old and still working fine. The Deep Cell battery from Walmart in my camper is 4 years old and fine.

AGM batteries would be perfect for this application. I run Odyssey batteries in several machines.

One BIG hint... If you install an AGM battery (Absorbed Gas Mat) do not put it on a trickle or float charger. Float or trickle chargers are intended to overcome the tendency of flooded lead-acid batteries to self-discharge. AGM technology brings with it very low self-discharge rates, thus there is no need to "top them up" with a trickle charger. Using a trickle or float charger on AGM batteries is as anachronistic as using a buggy whip to try to make your tractor go faster.

I just got back from Walmart. I measured the EverStart Maxx group 24 and group 24F across the base or bottom. Both measured 10” (254 mm). The BCI chart length values are different (260 mm for the 24 and 273 mm for the 24F) but they are the same across the bottom. They will both fit within the holding brackets. Noticed terminals were reversed between the 24 and 24F with the 24 having the correct configuration for my Kubota L3400DT. So guess I will go with the EverStart Maxx group 24. It will drop right in without having to mess with cables or rotating battery 180 degrees. Like the fact that the 24F has 750 cca while 24 only has 700 but don’t think the extra 50 cca is worth having to deal with the terminals being reversed. Spinning battery 180 degrees might be a problem because that would place the metal hold down bracket very close (maybe to close) to the battery terminals which would short out the battery if it touched both simultaneously.
