The tensioner has nothing to do with getting the belt on the lower pulley and ac pulley thats where the issue is. The tension pulley is for left right play not up and down
That is not right. The tensioner is for the belt you're talking about, and there is no 'directionality' to belt tension. The way you use that tensioner is loosen the nut in the middle of the tensioner pulley. That nut locks down the adjustment, you need to loosen it to change the adjustment. Then, loosen the bolt on the side of the tensioner bracket, that has the paint mark next to it in the picture you posted, counterclockwise. That bolt pulls the bolt the tensioner pulley rides on sideways to tension the belt. So first loosen it, put the belt on the bigger pulleys first and slide it over the small tensioner pulley last if it fights you. Then tighten that bolt on the side of the tensioner until the belt is appropriately tight. Last, tighten the nut in the middle of the tensioner pulley to 'lock down' the belt tensioner to that position.

typically the 'correct' tension is when you can push the belt in about 1/2" , midspan AND you need to recheck it after a days use(say 4-10 hours).

Not doubting your ability, we've all been there from time to time.

You said that you checked the length of the old belt to the new one. So that's not it.

Was the old belt broken? If not, how did you get off? Reverse the procedure.

Having done a few drivebelts in my day, the frustrating one's are usually due to being Very difficult to get your hands and or tools in there.

But then there's the odd one. It basically comes down to the fact that you're not seeing something. Sometimes it's obvious. Sometimes not. There's an adjustment somewhere that you're probably not seeing. Been there, done that. I've pulled off A/C units and power steering pumps to try and fit a new belt... only to find a hidden adjustment bolt.

It sounds like in this case, in your case, you can't even get it around the 2 main pulleys, with or without the tensioner.

Good luck.

Edit: For what it's worth, the second picture in your first post. That belt is basically on there, by that picture. You might have to manhandle it a bit, but don't use any sharp tools.

Or determine the correct direction and bump the starter once you get it to that point. Better yet, do like @85Hokie suggested.

One other thing to try. Heat up the belt.

It's the correct belt, according to the pix of his buddies twin tractor.
The problem is, he's got the belt on the WRONG pulley !
He needs to remove it, loop around the smaller, inner pulley, then over the AC pulley, then adjust the tensioner for 1/2" deflection. Then readjust after a few hours of use.

Wrong pulley could do it!

Hmm, is it on the bigger lower pulley or the smaller lower pulley ?
In your picture, you have it on the bigger pulley, while your friend's engine has it on the smaller pulley.
Looking at his etup, there's more than enough 'length' to wrap belt ove rhte 2 correct pulleys and then tension it. You should never 'force' a belt on..too easy to damage it.
no they are on the same pulley the outer one aka the larger one. That other belt you see is the alternator belt

really? Is that a fact……the smaller in side pulley is the alternator fan belt pulley it is clear in the picture there is a belt on it already. The compressor belt goes on the outside pulley which you can see in mine and my buddies tractor just taken from the opposite side i took mine from

Here is the zoomed in on said pulley that you shouted im wrong about

two belts…

Ok, can you post a picture of your tractor that's the same angle and view as your friend's picture ,that show's the pulleys and belt and tensioner ?

Sure wish I could be there in person and SEE what's going on,er...NOT going on....

russell its around only two well 1 and 3/4 the tension pullinghas been loosened andout of the way till i solve getting it completely on the ac pulley
Ok 1 3/4 pulleys down and only 1 1/4 to go!

What would happen if you were able to get the adjustable pulley inside the belt, get the belt onto the lower pulley and three fourths onto the top pulley so that you will pull the belt onto the last quarter of the upper pulley? Is that feasible to do?

If not then you will just have to persuade it onto the pulley with brute force and watch out for your fingers. I have used wooden broom handles since they are rounded to help drive a belt on the pulley where I could not get my hands in the proper place.

But do lay it out in the sun for a while or heat it up in hot water for a while. Heck soapy water may be the missing ingredient for success? Just throw everything you want at it and win

Often times when folks ask specific questions and post pictures with pictures that are too close up. For someone not standing there looking at the problem it's best to get a further back picture then move in with some close ups. So the viewer gets a general idea then a specific idea. This helps in problem solving.

finally got it on thank you to those who threw out Suggestions and ideas to assist with exception the the latest one posting who seems to be that one guy who thinks he is right when wrong among a few other choice words i would have for him.
My apologies if some on my post came out in a different language between work etc been on a tired side.

GreenVILE……. a shout out to you again sure glad youre not here!

Doesn't surprise me. The one belt on my L245 carries only the water pump and alternator. With the alternator pressed against the block it still requires prying with a screwdriver to force the belt over the pulley. Not good for the belt, but the only way to do it.

russellit left it out in the sun for the last day or so

was more pliable yet not enough ended up loosing two bolts hold on the ac compressor and it was enough to get it over and on the pulley
Ill post a pic of the two bolts in case it may help another with the grand l series for future reference

and one with a view from the right side as a reference for others

I admit I didn't see that belt coming off the back pulley in the first pictures. But was convinced it went on the front one when you posted your buddies.

Glad you got it done finally!

there seems to be a lot of adjustment left in the tensioner. might be worth the cost to buy another belt ,say 1"(25mm) bigger, cause there's no way you should have to loosen bolts or remove parts.

a lot is a understatement……its all the way in… but thats the belt kubota said it was and the same one listed when i looked. It matches everything printed belt that shredded and on my buddies. Funny his tension pulley is all the way in also

You got the belt on. You had 30 post offering suggestions. You seem offended that GreensvilleJay offered ideas to help, and glad he's not there to see it with his own eyes and offer first hand help. Since you're fairly new on this forum I'll let you know GreensvilleJay offers help based on his experiences trying to help others (as many others do on this forum), and seems to be a good problem solver.

I didn't offer any personal opinions on the belt not going on the pulleys simply because it most often a simple process or you have the wrong belt. I would want to be sure the belt is a length that will work without being too tight after a bit of use or you could be in for additional problems, but then GreensvilleJay made a similar statement!

Quite often they due that to cut down on replacing the belts as often and allow for extra tweaking during routine maintenance.

During normal operation a belt loses meat on the inside where it rides in the grooves on the pully.

This is why people assume the belt stretches over time. But it's actually losing mass.

This is why you can fold a belt in half. Measure it. Then find one the same length and the new one is a tight fit.

To get a new alternator belt on an air cooled deutz, you have to pull the upper alternator bolt to squeeze in enough room to get the belt over the pulley. On some belt driven air compressors, I have to remove the bolts and tip it forward to get the belt on.

Not trying to be feisty to the OP, glad the belt is on and the problem is solved. But for the benefit of anyone else with a similar problem who might come along later..
