A little background.

A family member loaned his Kubota 3800 to his neighbor. I don't know how the damage occurred or what the neighbor was doing with the tractor. Neighbor had borrowed the tractor several times over the last 4 years without any problems and lets my family member use his skid steer. The have been neighbors for 40 + years.

I am hoping someone can give me some feedback on what might have happened and cost guestimate to repair. Rear gear case is the only damage we can see. Gears look great and no metal in bottom of gear case. Thanks!

Ouch!!!

I would say the 3pt was severely overloaded and/or he pulled from the top link. Fixing thats going to be pricey.

I can't help with the solution, but can say around here the unwritten rule is "you borrowed it, you broke it, you fix it or pay to have it fixed".

Does the neighbor have something that puts excess stress on the top link attachment point? Like a 3PH backhoe? If so, it is possible/likely the 3PH backhoe attachment caused the damage to the gear case.

Many Kubota tractors require a heavy duty top link bracket to be installed if a 3 PH backhoe is used.

A guy I worked with ten years ago had a similar thing happen with his "off brand" tractor. It was a common name but I forget what it was. Anyway, he was using a box blade and the same thing happened....for whatever that is worth...

which '3800' ? I looked up an L3800, case is $1248 cdn..but suspect more parts are needed(like rockshaft section ) ??

good news is it's really clean !!! Hope some has a lot of Metric wrenches and a CLEAN garage to do the teardown / rebuild.

The operator forgot he wasn't on HIS skid steer! Maybe he had an implement on the rear and hooked it on a tree. How many broken pieces make up the missing area?

Looks like two castings to me - the hydraulic top cover and the differental/rear axle center housing

The top cover is available for $1400. I cant find any part number or indication you can buy a new center section..

I read where some older tractors such as my model would blow out back there if you were running say a brush hog through a field and a hidden stump or rock caused the implement to raise violently off the ground.

Not sure if newer models are subject to the same.

A little JB weld and take that baby to the auction! Although it does provide easy access to the rear end gears as it is!

There are two pieces total. That large piece (see photo) and I found a small piece of the casing about 12" above the damaged area on top of the tool box. Whatever happened it was violent.

You can see the hairline crack (rockshaft section?) in the case under the right upper arm.

I'm not an investigative expert but it looks like someone took a hard turn with an implement on the back and hit an immovable object with it.

Neighbor made the comment that he was driving it when the damage occurred so he guessed he would have to pay for the repairs.

I will have to go take another look, I guess I was focused on the giant hole.

Looks like its time for your family members neighbor to be buying himself a Kubota 3800. Then he can fix it the way it wants it. Years ago a friend of mine loaned his JD 4020 to his BIL and he put a homemade three point back hoe on it and broke the top link out of the rear end case also, That tractor ended up being parted out. Too many dollars to fix it.

Former neighbor had similar damage on a Yanmar. He was hauling a$$ on a gravel road while carrying large brush mower and missed a diagonal drainage cut. (think reverse speed bump)
It bounced him pretty high, and when the mower came down it tore the top and back of the gearcase off.
Fortunately, he had a parts tractor, so it only took a few hours work to swap the parts.

I went back and took another look at the tractor. I found no other cracks, but did find damage to the right side seat mount base and corresponding damage on the right lift arm. Whatever happened the 3 point lift arm/arms were thrust upward beyond their limits (see photo).

Can anyone give a labor estimate? Just want to try and have an idea of costs before we get an estimate from the dealer.

It's two cases broken.
That's a big tear down.
Transmission Case is $2700.00
Hydraulic case is $1200.00
You're probably looking at $2000 in seals, O-rings, bearings, gaskets, filters and fluids.
Labor I'll estimate $4000.00

So Approximately $10,000.
That's a pricey way to break a tractor!

I think this is exactly what happened. I saw a tractor in at the local dealer a couple of months ago with very similar damage that was done pulling off the top link.

For example, let's say you have a King Kutter receiver on the 3-point and you decide to put a strap around the top ball and start pulling on something that doesn't want to move. Bad stuff will ensue. 🧐
