I have some stainless steel hardware going on my tower project. What is the consensus for a good anti galling compound? I sure don't need much and generally wouldn't use SS.

I am considering putting a winch on the tractor but have a couple of questions that have no obvious answers, at least to me.
Power? Do you add a second battery? With the current draw of a 1-1/2 or 2 hp winch the alternator sure isn't going to keep up and that battery in my tractor isn't exactly large.

Where to mount? Permanent or removeable? Is it worthwhile to get a blank quick attach and leave it on there? Other suggestion, the 3 point perhaps?

Appreciate the feedback

You need a battery that can keep up with the load. I would definitely get a second battery or at least a higher capacity deep cycle battery. If you are considering a blank quick attach and using the winch on the loader arms, you stand a very good chance of damaging your loader arms. Fabricating a removable mount on the tractor frame is your safest bet. If a removable frame mount is not possible, maybe a mount that can attach to your 3 point as long as you can keep the winch below the axle when using it. Absent all that, a permanent mount to the frame is the only other option I would consider.

As far as anti galling compound the answer is yes you should use it. I worked in a power generating station and the main bus connections used SS hardware and boy if the last tech didn't use the compound he was awarded with some very choice comments. If you never plan on taking the hardware apart no you don't need it.

Thank you! I never considered a frame mount. I'll look to see what's involved there. Two batteries make sense - separated by diodes. The alternator can charge both but the 2nd will only power the winch.

Thanks!

I mounted a 5k lb winch on my L3800 in/on the factory brush guard. No issues with the stock battery. Had it on there for about 9 years before selling the tractor.
I used it for self recovery, either myself or someone else. Probably used it several times each year.
Some on here mention a winch for skidding logs, which is definitely a different level of winch needed, both speed and duty cycle.

...I am considering putting a winch on the tractor...
What's the intended use - getting a stuck tractor unstuck once in a while, or an afternoon of pulling big logs out of the woods?

I have a "lifetime supply" of the Permatex brand as well.

Hahahah....if I walk by it, even when it's on the shelf, it will automagically get "spread everywhere".

Works good though......

I would "2nd" the "frame mount" idea as well.

I'm thinking of a mounting system that will work with the existing "rear draw bar mount" as well as a "homemade front mount" so it can be used in both front and rear positions.

Factor in a long/big enough cord to go from front to back as well.

re: winch
yes, put on removable mount
have both rear and front mounting options. I've retrieved too many 'weekend offroaders' that found out their $$$,fancy FRONT mounted winches were USELESS in getting them out.
For sure ,2nd battery, and a double diode for charging.

My initial uses would be for putting some 'pull' on trees that I want to take down and be sure they fall in the right direction. I also have some use for a winch in my tower project - raising and lowering items to the top of the tower. A winch would be a lot more convenient than moving the tractor.

Front mount will work just fine, with a long cable, and a rear mounted cable roller.

hmm, obviously you've never seen the 'weekend offroaders' from around here....
they'd rather call tow truck than get out of their rides and wade through 3' of mud ! Ain't no way they'd know HOW to fish cable under and out the back.....
ewwwww..... get mud under my nails !!!!
THAT kind of crowd !!
