The trailer you posted looks similar to dandans and shaunrh. And having the biggun parked next to it can throw your perception off some  I gotta drag mine out tonight, so I can get a load of mulch in the morning. Will get some measurements for you to compare to when I get it on the concrete :D

Here's what I have. 16' dove tail. Couldn't check it on the pavement. Mother Nature dropped 1 1/2" of rain this afternoon  dove tail when the trailer is level sits 8" on the bottom of the frame. Actual frame for the tongue is 12" to the bottom :D I haven't had any issues going through fields or hooking it behind the tractor and hauling wood out of the woods ;)

Daren, Thank you for the photos. The visual really helps. What do you use for ramps to load your Kubota? That tailgate looks so short. For my B7100 with the backhoe I need a long approach so I don't bottom out. On my 12' trailer (which is too short) the top of deck is 21 3/4" ht and my ramps needed to be extended to 96" to be able to load with backhoe attached

Looks like they are willing to build me exactly what I want for a trailer for roughly the same money. So, now I'm trying to figure out what ramp length I want vs.the deck height.

What are some of you guys working with for ramp length vs. top of deck height?

PS: to load mulch on your open trailer what do you do load onto a large tarp and wrap it up for transport?

Dan, what's the actual clearance on the trailer?

Looks like a similar height to my Dakota trailer. I have a dove tail on mine that sits around 12" off the ground at the back. Had to go with a 2" drop on the hitch to level it out. Before the drop, the dove tail sat 6" off the ground  Only time I've dragged it is leaving the industrial complex I work in with the tractor loaded. Theres a steep drop where the two roads meet and the back will drag if I go straight off and then turn. If there's no traffic and I can hit it at a slight angle then there isn't an issue.
It turns out that there is only about 8.5" of clearance on the rear of this trailer. The side mount, ramp storage boxes, are about 6" forward from the rear of the trailer. They are the lowest point. I'm thinking too close for comfort if driving in a field.

One or two things to consider with the style of trailer you showed:

  • ramp spacing- are the fold-up ramps adjustable for spread/distance? I play around with the spacing a lot.
  • overhang- might the fold-up ramps prevent you from loading something that might hang a little but would be otherwise legal?
DanDan,
Great photo Thanks...

Any chance of getting some close up photos of the rear loading "Jacks" you have on this rig? I'm interested in having something to limit squat when loading.

No ramps :D just drop the tail gate and back it up on :D as long as the trailer is level, it follows the same angle as the dove tail. My brother has a similar trailer with out ramps or gate. His sits the same height. He drops dads l2250 in low 4x4 drops the fel rolled back on the deck and takes some of the weight off the front end. Then he just drives up on :D No ramps, blocks, or anything :D

Ideally though, the tailgate does need to be about a foot longer. But that's why I back on and drive off. Plus I can get the weight with implements centered better for towing ;)

I would recommend getting ST (special trailer) tires as opposed to LT (light truck) tires. A trailer tire has different requirements than a towing vehicle. Used to be most trailers came with the LT's. I have 2 14K trailers, 18' and 20'. The shorter one came with the LT's being built in 2002. The 20' (new) came with the ST's. I don't know if this is a huge issue, especially with lighter trailers, but something to consider.

There is quite a difference between trailer and vehicle tires. Trailer tires atre built to roll and carry loads. Vehicle tires are designed for ride and handling. I cant recall where i read, but there are benefits to running proper trailer tires.

Here's what I do for hauling mulch. I have 3 8x10 tarps I lay down in the trailer. After it's loaded, I just fold the ends up and strap them.

Daren, Great idea on the tarps with the open trailer...

What is your "top of deck" height when it's level?

Nice thing about the tarp, is theres minimal clean up on the deck. And once you get the mulch down, you can grab the tarp and roll the mulch to you :D Last bit you just fold the tarp and grab the bundle. that was three yards. Should have gone with another 3 yards. Only half way through the wifes flower beds

Top of the deck is around 18". Trailer handles great going down the road. :D
