Friggin' Cold - Synthetic Here We Go!

Yeah Skeets, multi weight is a no-brainer. But I have an issue with a heavier 15 when its cold. I prefer it lighter, like a 5 or 10 cold weight. My issue is that most conventional diesel oils are 15-40 or 20-50 or so for the cold/hot weights. A 15 or 20 for our Harley's are no issue - I've...

Friggin' Cold - Synthetic Here We Go!

I should have noted its stored in an attached garage. Its not warm out there, but certainly well above outside temps. I'm guessing it does get much below 20. Its really the 15w and the cold start that bothers me. Tractor starts/runs fine. I just don't like it. Of course, 15w-40 is the norm...

Friggin' Cold - Synthetic Here We Go!

First winter with the diesel. Been as low as -20 this season. Ran tractor at -8 couple weeks to run snowblower. 15-40 is just not cutting it for me. I do run it for 15 minutes before working it, but first few minutes make it work. Synthetic we go! Thinkin' 5-40 before next winter.

any theft problems in your area?

Yeah - know what you mean. For many years I joked "This house insured by Smith & Wesson." Really, its a Remington 870 Brushmaster 12ga with #2 mag goose loads - I WILL hit somebody with that!:D I'm in New York State, and trust me, not all of NYS is NYC. Our area is some of the most rural...

    Kubota BX25-D "Sure-Footer"

Don't do that - your mods have me looking at welders! My ability/tools for wood work (including trees) is pretty good. My metal working ability/tools is close to zero. The most I work with metal is sharpening the chain on my 046 Magnum! Your photos are an inspiration!

    BX25 tire chains

Not only way to go is 2-link. I'm thinking of added fronts as well.

How much does the Sun influence your heating needs?

Now, 'Foot, remember your lessons....the prices you cite are HUGE compared to here, but are they face or full cord?:) 16" firewood is common. So our 3 face @ $55 =1 full @$165. About 70% of upstate NY is covered with woods, so we have a lot of trees around. If trees are scarce, I can see...

How much does the Sun influence your heating needs?

Yeah - thought so. Where Skeets and I are from, firewood is usually measured in facecord, but we all call it a cord. I know better - but do it anyway. A "cord" of split firewood here goes for about $55 without delivery now. Was $25 split & delivered for years. Unfortunately, the market for...

    Question about natural gas

The by-products of combustion are carbon dioxide and water, so burning the NG will add moisture to the exhaust. As efficient as some of these burners are nowadays, exhaust is probably pretty damp. And, as cold as its been, some odd things happen.... Warmer weather on the horizon!

How much does the Sun influence your heating needs?

Skeets - I thought same thing. A "cord" is really about 3 "face-cord" of firewood. In certain areas, people call a "cord" what is really a face-cord - that's the way 'round here in New York. Hardwood firewood is done in face-cords, but softwood is usually full-cord only. Areas with a lot...

How cold & white is it where you at present.

We are at 0F - high was only 2 or 3. Low of -5 to -10 forecasted tonight. WC at -35F. We had ~1 foot late last week. An hour north is getting pounded by lake effect - Weather Channel just said up to 3-4 feet near Watertown, NY (they can have it)

    Front Chains on BX

No clue where Murph gets his chains, but he has it right. He has good 2-link chains that look heavy - only way to go. My BX2360 may look very similar shortly (minus the cab), when I add the front chains. I get my chains from my locally-owned hardware store. Price for fronts - 18x8.5-10 is...

    Death blow of an era

They did the same here for an old indoor theater. Something like $50k for 2 projectors. They were successful, and the theater is open. We have a drive-in ~30 miles from here. Makes me wonder if they will survive.

    New BX2370 ROPS Issue

I bought a new, leftover, BX2360 this year only because of the ROPS vs. the BX2370. Much shorter/narrower on the '60. The BX25 has had that taller ROPS for quite a while. I knew I'd tear something up with the '70 series ROPS, but it does have a nicer seat, and some better controls. For a few...

    Tire Chains on BX

Look around on here - I think there is an old thread on front chains. I think fronts are 18-8.5-10 or so - shouldn't be hard to find. I'll be looking for that thread, too. Mine front-end's been skating around on slopes. Chains might help.
