    Looking for some "machine advice"

Consider Grizzly also. It is based on the Birmingham design, & it is currently in production, where the Birmingham is not anymore. I particularly like their "gunsmith lathe". Virtually identical to mine, but with some nice improvements...

    Looking for some "machine advice"

This was back when DROs were a new thing (expensive) and it wasn't my money. I think I charged him $500 and DROs were in the $2500 range.

I don't know if you have any retirement communities nearby, ones out here offer machining courses for the hobby machining crowd. (Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, etc) One of our local community colleges used to offer a machining class, but recently dropped it.

    Looking for some "machine advice"

A small thing to be aware of: Many foreign made machines have dial graduations in both imperial (US) and metric. (nearly everyone else) (my Birmingham does) Not a big deal, but I have seen on two occasions where a entry level machinist got confused, and screwed up a part by reading the wrong...

    Looking for some "machine advice"

My mill is 2hp 220v 3 phase, powered with a Phase-a-matic PAM-300 solid state 1 phase to 3 phase converter. It has run flawlessly for nearly 30 years. I pulled the power from an unused 30a 220v dryer circuit. I'm told that this setup will provide less than full power, but I have never been able...

    Winter Prep Already?!?!

After clearing my property lines for my new fence, I now have the largest stockpile of oak, juniper, & cedar I've ever had. (about 3 real cords) But half of it isn't dry yet, and only about half is split. But at the rate I use it, that will be a few winters' worth. :)

    Looking for some "machine advice"

That machine looks great, Out here it would be gone in hours at that price. Clausing makes a great toolroom lathe, good size, (bigger than my Birmingham) loads of tooling, steady rest. Can't tell what collets it takes, but any collet setup is gold. If it was out here I'd be on my way to pick it...

Land smoothing/leveling rock root hard soil conditions

If I remember right, he made lots of shallow passes, a little deeper each pass. Ford 9N I think.

Land smoothing/leveling rock root hard soil conditions

I worked with a guy who had land like you described, (mesquite, palo verde, and creosote roots?) and he used a peanut grinder to put a very sharp edge on the scarifier teeth of his box blade. It cut roots very well, but the edge didn't last long in the dirt & rocks. I think he went through lots...

Who else buys tools/things for the explicit reason of "Because it's too cheap to pass up"?

Guilty as charged. I buy lots of tooling/fixtures/cutters/accessories for my machine shop.... most because I just can't pass up the deal. I probably have more stuff than I can use in my lifetime. But I have estimated that in the last 20years, I have bought well in excess of $10,000 in shop...

    Engine running too cool?

I had a '69 Mach 1 with a 390 HO that needed a new radiator & water pump. I replaced the 2 core stock radiator with a new 4 core radiator, new water pump, hoses, coolant, and thermostat. It immediately began running hot & sometimes overheating. I could not figure it out until a guy from the...

    Sometimes I'm Not Very Smart

When we cared for my FIL. there were a couple facilities in the area that loaned out medical equipment. Hospital beds, wheelchairs, ramps, walkers, bed rails, portable toilets, etc. They also supplied bed pads, diapers, & cleanup supplies when available. We borrowed a few items, and found a new...

    Daily Chuckle

I went to a catholic school 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grade. (I'm a recovering catholic) Several of the nuns carried 12" wooden rulers to whack hands & fingers (and butts) of misbehaving kids. One in particular seemed to relish any opportunity to apply this form of correction, but she used the metal...
