Many Private Vehicles are the same way… I own 3 myself. Many “agency” and “public use” vehicles were ordered to a gov-specification in quantity and often stored for years/decade before being placed into service. Just because you see some without emissions controls doesn’t mean they are...

I doubt there are Any ”brass gears” in the front axle of a Kubota. There might be some in a mechanical clock.

Gear oil smells like Garlic to me. It’s not sulfur in the oil (tho’ some folks relate that)…it’s Extreme-Pressure additives (mostly phosphates) that smell.

Are you sure you didn’t drop them down in the sump…? …or they’re stuck on the crank..? There’s no way they were operated without bearings with no heavier damage evident.

My first thought was that perhaps it wasn’t a fuel leak at all…but perhaps some spilt or a drip of oil from somewhere else that happened to land on the fuel lines.
