I think it needs to be upright in the cut of the seat base. That keeps it above the rest of the system so you don't get a siphoin effect. Also, be sure the leak is the breather and not the small return elbow hose on top of the hydro. The hose is part 10 in this photo.

Check the oil sending unit too. I once pulled an auto engine to change a rear main seal that looked to be leaking. After putting everything back together, I still had a leak. I had cleaned all the grime away before reassembly and sure enough, the sending unit leaked under pressure.

Check to make sure the wires to your headlamps have not been pinched by the hood hinge. That blows a 10 Amp (if I remember correctly) fuse when you power up the headlamps. That circuit also powers the shut off solenoid.
