For mowing, all the work is done at the tip of the blade. Speed only becomes influential if it’s just too slow to cut or blow the clippings out from under the deck. I normally run my rider at just enough throttle to cut the grass (when I don’t have leaves) and get it out from under the deck. If...

I’m curious how you’re measuring RPM with a sensor on a fuel line. Is the older (pre-2019) model BX23S a hydrostatic or gear drive machine? If hydrostatic, there could be quite a bit of error in PTO RPM and Engine RPM because of loading and efficiency of the hydraulic motor for the PTO...

A stump bucket is pretty darn good for that.

No, won't burn the house down, but there's a lot more turpentine and resin in pine species that will leave behind a lot more soot (because it doesn't burn as hot as hardwood). While it may not burn the house down, you may occasionally ignite the soot in the flue, and that can be a little hair...

Yeah, the black walnuts don't offer much unless you're looking for something to come out from under a lawn mower at about 300 MPH and hit you in the shins or take out a window from 100 yards. We had a large tree in our yard when I was a kid. I found the green ones quite useful for batting...

Got up early this morning to swap the grapple for the bucket so I could use the forks. I had a rather large order of cabinets coming. The truck finally showed up after 5pm. Unloaded our new cabinets and sorted them for installation. My bucket forks work, but it doesn’t take much to run outta...

Dunno what you plan to use to crack black walnuts with, but it better be hard and heavy. You might find more to eat in that old stump. What was the tree, cottonwood? They get GINORMOUS. One of the oldest ones in Alabama was at the Confederate Hospital site near Verbena. IIRC, it died about 10...

I was given permission to brew a batch of home brew today, but something I’ve been watching for several years interceded. This 70+ foot tall pine had a huge cat face right at the ground when I bought this place in 2004. After wondering when it was coming down for nearly 20 years, I got my...

Not quite sure why you think it isn’t pretty. Looks a lot better than anything I have (which is nothing).

Probably down to the heart wood as I ws saying. Old growth cedar will last longer, but usually requires some splitting to use it for rails or posts. I stuck my share of cedar in the ground for fence repairs, knowing full well if we didn’t replace the fence within 5-6 years, I’d be repeating the...

What did you do to or on your Kubota today?

The red heart wood is, but not so much for the white part. Cedar makes absolutely gorgeous lumber or project wood, but the white wood doesn't hold up in direct soil contact. I've stuck a few posts in the ground myself (the hard way with 6' long post hole diggers), and if there was more than 2...

Y Yeah if it stays relatively dry, they’ll last quite a while I take it you’re planting a preferred species along the fence line. Is that going to be functional fence, or a reminder to adjacent owners where the property line is?

Way too much sap wood on those posts. The white wood will rot away leaving you with a very wobbly skinny post from the red heartwood. But they’re still a lot cheaper than treated post that will also rot in even less time than the natural cdar.

Yeah, drier than a popcorn fart here too. I haven’t cut the lawn in at least a month. I try not to stress the.grass this late in the year, because I don’t have separate metering for watering that won’t jack up the sewer bill. We pay more for sewage than water. I see a rain collection system made...

Well okay then. I learned that grassy crops depleted nitrogen but legumes and root crops put it back. I didn’t really think before I asked the question. I can see the benefits of mulching in a straw crop for soil improvement too. I shredded all the dead plants and blew the chaff back on our...
