I've replaced a few zerks with some that had a better angle to get to, but I share your frustration. I'd modify the guard if I didn't have an alternative.

It can be argued that low/infrequent use requires more oil frequent oil changes than normal use. Because the moisture and contaminants that would be boiled off with a high temperature run time may remain in the oil. I certainly wouldn't change it less than ever year.
