Finally got a chance to mow out at the cabin today. 3 hour gauge time mowing around the shop, cabin, and mainly (most) trails/firebreaks. Have had so much rain I don’t remember grass this tall, could barely tell where the trails were if I didn’t know.

Amazing what selective thinning (2 years ago) does for forest floor diversity. Have seen wild blackberries in one spot prior to this year—they are thick up on those trails now and bearing fruit like crazy. Gonna have to be very wary if on foot before fall the bears love those, not quite ripe though.

Finally, a day off from work!! Managed to put the box blade to work today and finally get some grading done that I started last summer finished.

Man I have no complaints about the L2501. It's been insanely reliable. It was nearly 100 degrees today and the temperature needle just stayed in the normal spot and it was working it hard a few times. A great machine. I think the Kioti box scraper looks quite nice on the tractor too.

I am so impressed with the box blade, man did it work incredibly well. I didn't even need the shanks today, just the shear weight of the box dug into the ground. Once I experimented with the angles, I was able to get just enough cut without cutting too deep so I could level, cut the high spots and fill in the low spots and then I was able to extend the top link so I could just use the rear blade to smooth things out. I still can't believe how good it worked!! I'm happy. A good purchase!!

It is a BEEFY unit!

Oh, I also did some mowing with my lovely Z451 zero turn. Made some decent stripes today. Grass was taller than I liked, but what can you do. Weather and time.

Overall, I had a good day. Yep, a day off and I worked. But it was tractor time, that's always a good time. I rather be playing with dirt and equipment than watching Netflix. But that's just me.

Out with the old....I finished stripping all the bits off the old mid-mount mower and moved what was left. There's lots of rust holes in the old mower deck and in several spots the thick paint is all that is holding the thick flakes of rust together.

With the old one of of the way I was able to move the new steel sheet ready to get started on making a new mower.

Every home needs a tractor with forks.

When I first started experimenting with my winch mounted crane and trailer it worked pretty well for what it is.

But I thought that it would be better if I put some outriggers on it. So I bought a pair of el cheapo fold up and adjustable RV stabilizers from etrailer.

25_1_24-4.JPG

They were a big improvement in holding the boom hinge post plumb making rotating a log much easier w/o having to fight gravity. That was a year and a half ago. They are made from thin stamped out sheet metal and are now deformed enough so that folding and adjusting them is difficult. Last week I made a replacement pair that will be more rugged.

I put them on last Thusday.

I also figured out a way to take the winch off the tractor w/o removing the crane. It might not look it but it is very solid sitting there.

Great Idea / nice customization!.

I have thought on and off about a forwarding trailer, but for now use one of a couple small trailers if need be (OEM forwarding trailers seem pricey to me). couple questions:
1. Any reason not to use a lock n roll hitch?
2. Did your winch not have kick stands on it? Or are your additions more robust so as not the fold the OEM ones?
3. The 4 corner posts look like they might fold but I am confused as they set in a stake pocket? What am I missing on the corner post bracket construction with stake pocket below?
4. With the modification do you now winch the logs from the crane? (Don’t take crane on / off the winch?)

looks very functional. Nice job. 👍

1. Any reason not to use a lock n roll hitch?

Do you mean Rock n Roll ? or Pintle Hitch - I would always use a Pintle or equivalent hitch in the woods. Even with level ground you might have go thru a ditch or over a rock or large root. I have never, knock on wood, had trouble with my hitch set-up even going down some pretty good hills.

The winch is an 25 YO Farmi 290 with just a plain dozer blade. I added all the rest.

The trailer is a 3000 lb capacity Pronovost that has removable panels

I added stake pockets. I used to load it by hand in the woods, then block up on the trailer, and split at the shed. The loading by hand part is a no-go now - thus the interest in a crane.

A couple years ago I made a cutting table and one side of the bunks that could fold down.

Some times but only if I cut them into short/light logs first. This works good if I am going out to pick up one tree or a clump that fell on the road or a trail. But if I am thinning or working in a broader area or have longer winch pulls I like to go out first with just the winch and bunch cut to length logs trail side.
I pulled this mess out of the apple tree with just the winch and left it trail side, then came back later with the trailer when I had a couple three such piles spread around the woods.

That’s a great set up from the crane to the trailer to the unload on the cutting table. 👍

Put the L5460 and FDR2584 to work on the lawn.

Finished and noticed the front right tire was low. Aired it up and didn't see anything obvious so I'll keep an eye on it.
