Ok so we decided not to sell the tractor. the 1977 model does need some attention.

first the tractor wont start without jumping off my truck. battery is new not sure if it is the right size what size do i need ?

the front tires are falling apart and i would like to replace with a different tread, the size is 4.00-12

howdo i test the alternator to see if it is charging. ?

there also seems to be an oil leak arouund the base of the steering column. it was very cold when i noticed this?

the tractor has given great service over 10 years and now it is time for me to give back.

i want to also check injectors, glow plugs as well as adjust valves.

thanks in advance.

Sounds like you've got yourself a little project!

Battery needs to be at least 600 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) on that little guy, but if I were you I'd try to get one that approaches 800 CCA's. Check to make sure the bigger battery will fit in the battery well. You can also try the gel-cell aircraft batteries, they give you more CCA's in a smaller package.

Tires can be purchased at most automotive tire shops. Sometimes they have to order them it, but it is no big deal.

I've never pulled out the multimeter to test an alternator, I usually pull the thing and take it into Autozone/Pepboys or any other parts dealer and have them put it on their diagnostic machine. That older tractor might have a generator instead of an alternator.

ck batt voltage with eng off. Should be 12.2 to 12.8. Start eng, raise rpm to 1500. Voltage shoulb be 13.4 to 14.8, If charger is working.

Ok so i did this and the result is the charger is not working. my first question is do i ahve a big enough battery, brand new from the store it wont crank the tractor. if i jump it, it works. can the alternator be rebuilt with new brushes etc or does it need to be replaced.

What size battery do you have? What was the voltage in the battery when you checked it? What was the voltage with it running? Do you have another good battery that will fit to make sure it isn't the battery. Just because it is new, doesn't mean it is good. Have the alternator checked. Maybe the voltage regulator is bad. The size of the battery shouldn't make any difference to the alternator output once it is running.

The valves are easy to adjust, do a search on valve adjusment for L175, ServiceDeptVic answered my question on the clearances. Since your gasket is old I would buy a new one and also make sure to get the gaskets for the hold down bolts; they are cheap (IIRC 88 cents).

Take the alternator to a parts store to test it. The alternator on my L175 looks suspiciously like the alternator that was on my Datsun pickup.

LMAO! HA!! I was thinking about that the other day but my 7610 doesn't appear to have enough room.

I would make double sure that the battery has a good ground ----- that may be why it's not working. When you jump it, you may be supplying the ground needed through your other vehicle. That'll get it started and it'll run fine without the battery --- all it's there for is to get it started. No??????

What voltage do you get if you put the positive probe of your meter on the positive battery terminal and the neg meter probe on the tractor frame???

If you take out the glow plugs, you can wire wheel them to clean off the carbon. To test them, hook the wire up to each plug one at a time and set it against the cylinder head (to ground it) and turn the ignition switch to glow and see if it starts to smoke or get hot. Check each one and replace if necessary. The injectors you can take to any shop that has an injector tester, or take off the injection lines and remove the injectors. Hook up the lines to the injection pump and instead of having them routed over the engine to the cylinders, route them out away from the engine, if room permits. Hook up the injectors, and watch the spray pattern. It is better to take them to the shop to have them tested because you can check the pop off pressure, and better see the spray pattern, but if one is definitely bad, trying it this way will make it show up. Be careful not to inhale or touch the spray.

On the hood hooks they are easy to just re-make them. A lot of items that I wanted were discontinued at the dealer so bone yards have been a place to search.

If you google search for used and salvage tractors, or even Kubota's, there a a lot of sites for tractor parts and some yards are dedicated to specific name brands too. Sad thing.............an orange bone yard. :(

let me just say that pics are coming soon.

the fuel lines are rough can i use the braided kind that i use on the mercedes diesel?

is there a spec on the clear fuel lines on the tractor. i would like to replace them all.

i still have electrical issues? battery has 13.4 or so volts and i get no action when i turn the key. my original webbed ground strap had split in half so i replaced with a #2 negative battery cable, because it was short enough, cheap and had the correct ends.

how do i test the rest of the system to see where my problems are located?

the fuses are very thin, i will replace and see what happens.

the tractor has had radiator flush,
replaced radiator cap with a 7# cap from stant hope it was enough,
can some one tell me the correct pressure????
fuel, oil and air filter replaced.

seat has been recovered.

hydraulic filter cleaned, radiator screen cleaned

hopefully new tires soon.

drained tranny fluid. i have seen something on this site about some special high dollar fluid. what is it called? is it lifetime? is it recommended for this 1977 L175

can i get a sticker kit?

thanks DA
