Plowed the driveway at the place I just moved to. It has a pretty good hill and honestly I’m thinking I may need to get a snowblower or a bigger machine. The place I am at now is in a snowbelt I guess but basically gets 130” of snow minimum per year. The old back blade works but I’m gonna run out of places to drag it to efficiently. I was looking at the land pride sbp11. It’s the pull behind snowblower where you can drive forward. If anyone has any feedback on that model or advice for snow in general (with steeper grades) with a smaller tractor I’m all ears. Won’t be getting anything new till next winter probably.

I'd start with some chains for this year. Won't hit your pocketbook too hard.

Used the snow blower for the second time to clean about 10" of fluffy stuff. I need to work on my strategy around the round about close to the house... It's pretty inefficient for now.

Here are the temporary winter quarters. Hopefully just for this winter...

I have the same tractor with R1'S. I have a long steep driveway with loaded tires.
I have no need for chains and would give it a go without them and see how that works.
Loaded tires give them more bite.

Thanks! I haven’t slipped yet but it’s been packed snow and fresh snow no ice that I can tell. My main concern was if I got a snowblower or heavier back blade that I would be able to get up the hill and still clear snow or if I would run out of traction or power.

Not a lot of snow but enough to start learning with this thing (from Homestead).

Not sure if the loader and snow blade are posed for the photo, but something looks off. Are you running it in that orientation with the loader raised up?

I think maybe I had just pulled forward from a back drag from an area I pushed more gravel than I intended. When pushing want to say lift arms were more down and dump / tilt plane was more upright. Open to input on proper use. First time using and was creeping around turtle speed trying not to wreck the gravel but still get some snow off. 🙃 Mostly successful (after a few high angle back drags) but no speed records were in jeopardy!

OK ... just checking. Don't want you to damage that nice tractor. (y) Nice looking snow blade though. I don't have any Homestead implements but they have a good reputation.

The photo below shows where I typically position the loader when pushing with the blade. I want the loader cylinders to be as short as possible when there's stuff in front of the blade, and particularly if there's any significant resistance to forward motion.

Looks like a hallmark movie almost in there. Very nice. 👍

how do you wrestle the winch on/off? Or was the tent set up around the winch? I am imagining that would be a pretty good handful to dead lift and carry to install on the back of the machine.

I had to move the zero turn due to replacing a door in the barn. Summer tools do not like to be woken up in the winter

Used the L3901DT and grapple yesterday to a log to the splitting/stacking so I could block it up, split and stack it. This is one of the longer logs that I had moved earlier this summer, it was 10' long and about 20" across.

When I was done splitting, I put the bucket back on and cleaned up the splitting area. Hate to say it, but I had to use a shovel to get all of the saw dust and wood pieces in the bucket.

Warmed up from unseasonably cold to unseasonably warm. Gotta love these 40 degree temp swings, NOT!

Just basic maintenance checking. Checked the air filter. Viewed a thread here at OTT about someone loading up their air filter from back winded snow when snow blowing. Happens. Wind gets a bit turbulent as it passes through the woods. Fluid levels checked. New snowblower so I checked the drive chain tension. Checked the tire chains. Battery tender checked. Ready for the next dump. Tonights precipitation is suppose to start as frizzle and morph into 3-4" of real snow. Oh yeah, more ice to maintain the slippery hard packed surface over the driveway. Better to just leave the light covering of snow. Better traction as the snow crystals bite into the hard under surface. Good test surface to check out if I have any micro porous rubber left on the ice and snow truck tires. Almost like studs when new. Now????

Tractor is now at 654 hours. This means I've put 100 hours on it since getting it last January.

Doubt if I will be putting in more than 100 hrs/year. Last few years with the NH were closer to 50hr/year. I think I spent almost as much time doing maintenance on it than seat time. Way too many zerk fittings. More so when the old Lincoln battery powered grease gun died. Forearm workout. Who needs a gym membership. Made the annual oil and filter change a bit costly/hr. Changed the coolant from a Rotella brand to supposedly a long life Yanmar brand to extend the maintenance period for at least the coolant.

Does anyone check their coolant with an anti freeze tester or multi meter? Haven't ever. But the testers are inexpensive and the process is quick and simple assuming the tester is calibrated to be correct. Or better just flush and change the coolant on schedule.

You didn't mention how long the driveway is. Ours is only about 100 yards. Couple of thoughts. If it isn't too long, can you move the banks back with the loader? I got by with only a rear blade for about 10 years. Next it was a combo of a rear blade and a loader. Then a rear-mounted blower and finally an 8' front blade.

Rear blade only worked very well for smaller snows but was the last choice for deeper stuff. Rear blade / FEL was a lot better. Still used the rear blade until the snow was too deep, then made at least the first pass pushing through with the FEL.

The blower was very good, especially for deeper snow and driveways. Looking rearward wasn't bad for our place. Some posters here have 1/2 mile driveways and that would be too long to run in reverse. The shortcoming of the blower was trying to clear snow at our church parking lots. With the lots too wide to toss the snow completely off it meant re-blowing it. With each pass the snow becomes more solid.

What is probably the final method is an 8' Fisher plow that came from a pickup truck modified for the FEL. It's fast and if necessary the snow can be stacked if I run short of space for it.

If it weren't for the parking lots and cost wasn't a concern I'd have a big cabbed tractor with a front blower and rear blade.
