My manual says use oil with CJ-4 rating. This will be my first oil change. Shell makes a great 15w-40 full synthetic oil but it says something like " Improved wear performance versus API CJ-4 technology" indicating that it does not have the CJ-4 rating. Would it still be okay in your opinion even though it does not have the CJ-4 rating?

you should have posted the Shell product 'number' ! so 'we' could lookup and compare.....'apples to apples'.
I can't say 'yes, go ahead' just based on 'improved wear performance' as there may be other factors to compare.

Yes. Current service category is CK-4.

Does it have the newer CK-4 rating (2017) which exceeds the CJ-4 rating (2006)? Shell offers a bunch of oils with the CJ-4 rating and some with the CK-4 rating.

If your engine was designed to run with CJ-4 oil in it, so you can use anything NEWER (CK-4,Cl-4,CZ-4...) and it'll be fine.
Now it 'might' run 'better', but it'll cost you more as synthetic oils cost more.....
I've got 1500hrs on the 'cheap stuff' ,zero issues, starts and runs same as it has from day one.

Did the OP ask for an opinion on the use of synthetic vs non-synthetic oil?

The Shell T6 oil is very affordable compared to the Schaeffer oil that I've been buying for the past five years or more. $70 for a 3-gallon pack ... that's pretty darn good.

Rotella T-6 is very good oil and I’ve been using it for years. I recently switched to Valvoline extreme synthetic diesel oil because Cummins endorses it for my truck. Since I buy it for the truck, I also use it in the tractor.

yes he did..... in that'CJ-4' is non-synthetic and the Rotella T6 is a full synthetic.

What are you talking about? CJ-4 vs. CK-4 relates to oil standards for use in diesel engines and has no bearing on whether the oil is synthetic, a blend or non-synthetic.

The OP isn't asking whether or not he should use synthetic oil, just confirming that the oil he wants to use meets the minimum requirement as provided in the owner's manual.

@slice38, as I and others have stated, your oil of choice is good to go since it exceeds the requirements listed in the owner's manual.

From the API.

Wow! Thank you all for your detailed responses. This is a great forum. I’m going to get the Rotella T6 full synthetic 15W-40 and a Kubota filter. I’m comfortable now that it’s a suitable choice. Thanks again!

You can always go higher in the ratings (unless there is some disclaimer on the product warning you not to do so). An example. GM began using a newer spec ATF (transmission fluid) from it's older Dexron series (III, IIIH, and IV) and began to spec Dexron VI and marketed it as "backward compatible" with some "caveats" for certain GM transmissions to stay with the older spec fluids.
I don't know of anything like that currently on your engine oil question, but for the most part you can always move "upscale", but never use anything "below" the spec called for in your manual
