I notice that my BX 25 doesn't stop well when it is cold, Braking seems better once the tractor warms up. This goes for the foot brake which feels like it has pressure but I can push it as hard as it'll go and the tractor will keep moving, Also when letting off the forward pedal the tractor doesn't slow up like it does one warm. Is this normal?
Thanks

You need to clean and lube all the HST linkage!

They work better once warm and used a couple times, I would not say they are the best brakes I have ever used but don't seem to really do anything when cold and by cold I mean winter weather. I don't hear or feel the motor straining and I don't feel its fighting the motor. Does RPM have any effect on the brakes?
I did use a low temp grease but I can Clean it better ( I believe it is clean )

The brakes might need adjusted, but the brakes will not override the HST being engaged.
If the HST pedal and linkage are telling it to go then the brakes are worthless.

The pedal itself feels good with out a lot of free play but I can check the adjustment.

It's not free play that is the issue, you can move the pedal and thee linkage could be sticking and the dampener or the neutral holder could be keeping the HST engaged causing it to not stop.

The brake on these little BX tractors should not be needed to slow or stop the tractor in most conditions. Just taking your foot off the HST pedal should bring it to a gradual stop.

If you are having to get on the brake to get it stopped/slowed down, something in the HST pedal or linkage is not right, as the experts are saying here.

The HST pedal on my BX needed to be kept clean and lubed to work right and acting like you describe was always a sign that it needed attention.

Maybe there is more to your problem than regular maintenance, but that is step # 1.

Okay, So just clean and lube the linkage? The tractor is kept clean and is in nice shape but the linkage could be gummed up a bit. Is there a write up for checking the adjustments?

Have you greased the pivot under the floor mat?

Yes I greased recently when i greased the rest of the machine, When I let off the forward pedal it seems like it takes a while to stop ( With out using the brakes ) I do believe that part is better when warm as well.

You probably need a new dampener.

Disconnect it, if your problem stops then you have your answer.

Soak the hst pedal linkages with WD40 and wipe/soak/air nozzle clean up the excess with a rag, then coat the assembly linkages with Fluid Film for long lasting lube and protection from moisture.

I ordered the damper as mine has a ripped boot, when I replace it I'll make sure to soak all of the linkages.
Is there a spring that is also supposed to pull it back to neutral?

Thanks

As someone else indicated above, most of us here with HST tractors rarely use the brake for anything but parking.

So my take on the situation is that the question might better be:

"Why do I have to use the brake to stop my HST tractor?"

My guess is after you replace the damper and ensure the pedal returns to neutral when your foot is removed, you will not be thinking of using the brake much.

Then perhaps you will move to another related question that comes up from time to time: Why does my HST tractor stop so suddenly? Or course if the damper is functioning properly you may not have this issue...

Would the neutral spring cause my issue? Is it in the front near the fan area? I'll take a look when i install the Damper.
