Well, its good to know what the weak points are - and to get ahead of those weak points if possible. Personally, I prefer to read about those guys who have over 400,000 miles on their trucks and the engine is still running fine. Just because I'm a "glass is half full" kind of guy, not "glass is half empty".

Most of the lift pump/injector issues occurred with the 24 valve 5.9 that was used prior to the 2003 common rail upgrade. I haven’t, nor have I heard of anyone who has experienced problems with the common rail 5.9. Not that they don’t have problems occasionally, but systemic problems in common seem to be rare. The only problem I have had with my 2007 was right after I first bought it in 2009. An injector failed; turns out that there was contamination in the fuel tank and system. After the system was flushed and the injector was replaced, I’ve had no repairs since, just periodic maintenance. In fact the truck itself has had very few repair issues, mainly just routine brake replacement. I would not shy from a vehicle with the common rail 5.9. And you will be very happy that the maintenance can all be completed in 45 minutes at home. The other nice thing about the Cummins engine is you can buy any needed parts at the Cummins shop for cheaper than they sell the Mopar version at the Dodge/Ram dealership. I buy all my filters and even fluids at our local Rocky Mountain Cummins shop.

The only thing that really bothers me about that list is the Brazilian made block but I can get verification as to whether there's a 53 on the casting. Also, the work trucks have detuned engines right, and the article addresses engines that went into Dodge trucks so not sure if it's an apples to apples thing.

My friend has all of the necessary information to stop by the dealership and check out the truck so I'm waiting on him to get out there before I make a decision.

No Cummins shop anywhere near me so I buy my Fleetguard (Cummins recommended) filters on-line from Geno's Garage. However, the local Walmart carries the MoPar filters for the Cummins for an excellent price.

Winnemucca is on the interstate. No truck shops there?

I read through this article more closely, and as I thought, these are all related to the 24 valve version of the engine that was manufactured prior to the 2003 common rail version. I had one of those in a 1999 truck and was aware of those issues, but never experienced them. The common rail version is much improved.

My good friend is out of town on a work trip to Dallas, TX (pilot for a billionaire) and since he's in a hotel for a week and probably bored, he sent me a bunch of dump truck adds from Facebook (which I'm not on). The one that looked promising is a 2010 F-750 dump truck with the 6.7 ISB Cummins engine, 7-speed manual trans and 54k miles. A DPF delete only requires a downpipe and programmers/chips are available for this engine. It's dirty and has some flash rusting on it but overall a decent truck. It's hard to find the specs on a 2010 F-750 it seems.

This is a good option to add a gooseneck hitch to a dump bed. A well would need to be made in the bed with a removable plate to access the ball that would be connected to the frame. Shouldn't be too hard to fabricate and weld up a nice gooseneck receiver that adds to functionality while taking nothing away.

The seller sent me three videos which make it look even more promising. I can upload them to YouTube if there's any interest in seeing them.

Looks of similar vintage to the F-750 I parked next to getting sand at the DPW garage last week. This one may have a longer chassis and box.

If I see the former DPW Superintendent, I'll ask him about how it's been. While retired a couple years ago, he would have bought it. I don't know the current crew well, and most are new.

54k isn't even broke in. Certainly has some promise.

Be curious what the more knowledgeable truck guys have to say.

I spoke with the seller to ask if the truck has DPF. It doesn't have DEF and he doesn't think it has DPF either, but he'll call me back later today when he has access to the truck.

I'll throw in one little detail That I often think about on these kinds of purchases, How useful will it be in late fall, winter, early spring.

In other words, look at a 4wd truck too, that little feature comes in quite handy when you need to use the truck in nasty weather and bad conditions. ;)
Our mountains can really throw a monkey wrench into things we want or need to do.

And yes I know you have your other 4wd that can be used in bad weather.
And yes I know I'm really good at spending others money. 😜

If I buy something like this it would be a spring, summer and fall truck only, and mostly summer. I'd keep my F-250 which is an all year round truck. I'll upload video to YouTube so that you can see and hear more.

Yeah, makes sense.

Not sure when Tier IV came into effect for trucks like this.

If it pre-dates Tier IV, that's a great thing.

Doesn't seem like 15 years ago, but time flies..... ;)

That truck has the DPF on it. Just behind the right front tire in the above pic.
I'm amazed that you can see a DPF filter in the photo I posted. 😂 I uploaded the three videos (attached to make one video) to YouTube.

For the Cummins engines, the 5.9 was pre-emissions, the 6.7 was the redesign that incorporated emissions.

Is that the case for all Cummins engines going into all trucks?
