really WHO would put a starter INSIDE an engine or a concentric throwout lever ???
at the other end , the PHD EE I worked for DID accept anything I offered, and he'd worked on the original Canadarm

I don't know if it still holds true, but back when I used to work running an electronics test lab, went to a whole meeting on GM dashboards. They were talking about how they had to use a "Pogo pin" bed of nails fixture to test the dashboards because the connector on the dash was rated for TWO mating cycles, and if they used it, it lost half it's rated life.
That's right, when they connect your dash, it is only rated to be disconnected/connected one more time. After that, you are on your own.
Why are wires in cars so short? Well, if you add up 1 inch of wire times all the wires in the car, times all the cars, it is real money
That is also why all new cars do almost everything by the CAN bus. Run the bus and power where you need to, put a chip back there - you get to cut out hundreds of feet of wire out of the car, the chip is less expensive

wow, someone who KNOWS what POGO pins are !!! Need any ?? 3-400 hundred ! From a test jig I made 3 decades ago.

yeah 'short' wire, arrrgh. My installer 'saved' money doing that BUT took TIME to try to fish/cut/install into the control boxes. I told him I need 2 FEET left ( about 50 cents back then).

CANbus is a friggin nightmare that sadly became 'industry standard' ! NISSAN can't get the wiring correct(there IS a 'standard'), their 'experts' can't read and understand THEIR own documentation. 'Fun' when the bus gets locked cause One computer 'freezes'....IDIOTS !!!! I can eliminate the CANbus, just need +12 and ground, BTDT.

Nah, don't need any pogos - needed a dozen or so about 18 months ago at the office, and we ordered them
My son has done CANbus on SAE Baja race cars. Most of my work is I2C or USB
I know my current car doesn't have _A_CANbus, but has at least SEVEN of them

Do not dismiss the part "accounting engineers" contribute to bad design and implementation. Have you ever listened to and "accounting engineer" randomly decide to take 10% out of a project element?
