Dealer pricing strategies.

I went to the dealer (California) yesterday to look at new tractors. I’m considering an L2502 or L3302 with HST, loader, quick attach bucket, forks, and top & tilt kit. He wrote up a quote for all the various components. Getting home I look on the website “build my Kubota” page and find the dealer quoting roughly 20% more than the website MSRP for the same components. Are these things in high demand, or something else?

When I bought mine, my quote was a bit less than build my Kubota.

You could ask them when it's so high compared to "build my Kubota". It could be something different about California.

I suspect the 'cost of living' in CA is a lot higher than the other 47 states, so he 'has' to charge more just to 'make ends meet'. Though I did see a report that CA is making so many solar electrons they're selling them off at a cut rate to NV, etc.
If you're close to the state boarder, try another state dealer. Might not have to pay local taxes, which could pay for the transportation cost ??

I saw an article recently in one of the AG magazines stating that the compact tractor market is oversold from Covid demand burnout and there is now excess new inventory in the market resulting in lower new and used equipment prices.

Larger AG equipment has retained its values because they didn't go through the same covid bubble.

Shop around

One more thought, maybe they are including options that you aren't in build my Kubota.

Just an example of buyer beware. Way way back I took a Chevy Monte Carlo to a local Chevy dealer who sold me the car for a tune-up. When I reviewed the bill, there was a line item marked something like "NP47" with a quantity of 1. I asked what part that might be and they told me it was their profit. I told the guy that was difficult for me to grasp because they charged more than list price for the spark plugs. Never went back there, and they eventually vanished.

I would suggest going back to that dealer with what you found and call him out on it. If he won’t drop the price down, tell him no sale and you will let others know of there shady sales. Thats provided your info and there’s are identical.

Not uncommon.

Most (all?) dealers will charge shop rate (and inflated hours) to set up the tractor and to install optional equipment.

Definitely buy from a different dealer!

I've been very lucky with the two Kubota dealers I've purchased from in MT and WY. The dealer in Sheridan where I bought the M6060 sold me that tractor for the original selling price i.e. the selling price when they placed the order, rather than the updated selling price once the tractor showed up (about a $10k difference!) They could have easily made more money on that tractor but customer relationships are important to them.

By the way, Heartland Kubota has an L3302 listed for sale and they show most of their prices. This might help you get a better sense of what a fair price is.

Thank you. I'll visit another dealer and see what they have. Then call the first guy and ask him what's up with pricing.

My local dealer is just 3 miles from my house and they've had a lot of inventory for many, many months. They NEVER sell above the MSRPs listed on Kubota's website and often will reduce the cost for cash payments. If you're financing through Kubota then expect to pay MSRP.

Last week I called the dealer to ask about rear defrost and rear wiper for the M6060. I was really surprised when the manager told me that it'll be the same price as shown on "Build My Kubota" when adding those options. It comes with three pieces of rear glass and an alternator upgrade too, and all for under $1k. If you piece that kit together on Messick's or similar it's many thousands of dollars.
