It’s quite frustrating when you have the knowledge, expertise, and experience to do things you no longer have the physical ability to do. I’m just at the tip of the iceberg on that down hill journey.

If you don’t have family nearby who are both willing and able to take care of at least the small stuff that comes up, it’s really tough maintaining a household.

I feel differently. I hung both of the shop doors myself - 12 x 10 and 20 x 10. Both are insulated and have one full width insulated glass panel. This was the smaller one and I have zero concern with winding the springs on either one then or now. The only tools needed are a socket, two 1/2" x 18" steel bars, and the ability to count to 42. I can still climb a ladder and in retrospect I should have done it myself.

Dan
AND make DAMN sure the bars stay fully inserted in the hole while turning. Have a spotter who can drive, so when something doesn't go as planned they can drive you to ER.

One of the springs broke on my garage door during covid. It was something I had wanted to replace for a while so I went about getting estimates for a new 18' wide insulated door. At one point in the process I ordered one through HD for a little over 3 grand installed. They charged my card as soon as I placed the order then two weeks later told me it would be months before it was delivered to the installer and the installer would complete the job at their discretion. I canceled that order and set about trying to find another source.

Not a single garage door dealer could provide a set delivery date and all wanted big bucks up front with no set date for completion.

I had already bought a larger HP opener in preparation for a heavier insulated door. I ended up buying a set of springs through HD for $75 and installing those and the new opener myself. I added some insulation to my existing door and it has been operating fine. I was all in for less than $200 with the new opener and springs. Unwinding and winding those springs isn't all that hard. I did have some 1/2" bar stock to make some longer winding bars with. Those 2' bars they send with springs will strain your milk towards the end of the wind.

That hurts. It especially hurts because it didn't have to be that way. The American medical establishment is still peddling nonsense that has long been debunked. If you are dealing with diabetes, the worst thing you can do is to listen to your doctor.

Good info in that video for sure, and I believe it 100%.

The only thing "wrong" with it, is she kinda "glosses over" how hard it is to actually eat like that in todays world.

I have tried, and I lost weight, and my sugar was lower, and everything she said was true.

However, actually living with a diet like that is tough. Much tougher than she makes it out to be, at least for me it was.

If for the last 55 years your 3 main food groups have been Pasta, Pizza and French fries.....You are going to have your "will power" tested to the ultimate magnitude.

Just sayin..... (y)

Thanks for posting Dan! This hit me right between the eyes. The story of my life has been fixing and building things and the thought of not being able to do those things never really entered my mind. To hand over that money had to hurt!

I have been type two diabetic for over twenty years. One thing I learned early on through daily testing was that fats in food were my friend. Yet so many labels on food are low fat and will spike my numbers because its almost like direct injection. Didn’t think I would live long enough to see a video like this but I am encouraged by it. The looks I get from people when I tell them the reason we are getting so fat is because we don’t eat enough fat is priceless! And my cholesterol is just fine.

You certainly have to be more cautious when you get older. Just cut down three massive dead ash trees. All double trunks up to 30" diameter and about 70 feet tall. One 12" branch recently broke off and went 40' into the corn field so I had to do something. Had my wife present with cell phone just in case. Still working on the cutting up and removal one week later.

Thankfully i don't have to worry about overhead doors, springs, rewinds, tensions, etc. as I have none of those things. Now if I could just locate what used to be located in the O'l noggin. I know it was there last time I dusted. Hello Charlotte!

My numbers often go higher than the meter can register. A1C often very high as well. Passing kidney stones from time to time are lotsa fun too.

I recently had 2 like that taken down. Loggers were working next door and I let them take a valuable log on the property line and the first big log from the biggest one in exchange for dropping the 2 dangerous ones. They were good and dragged everything out to an open area in my yard with a big skidder. Barter can help save some money when I need help.

I’m not as old as some of you guys, but I’m getting up there.

Ladders and chainsaws are two things I approach with much more caution than I did years ago.

Never liked ladders. Was reasonably adept with a chainsaw.

Interesting presentation. She's discussing type 2 diabetes and giving examples of someone using 300u if insulin per day. Some of the eating habits are because of lack of knowledge and discipline which are bad and get amplified over time.

Ever been out working on a project and you get "hunger pains", a feeling in your stomach you're hungry? We typically just keep on and do nothing. Those "pains" are your body telling you your insulin level is getting low and you need to eat. Keep ignoring it and you eventually are what is called "diabetic"!!

Barter didn't work for me pair of loggers / arborists approached me after a tree had fallen crushed the new roof. They could have the hardwoods trees felled in exchange to thin the property of any trees found that could reach the house, that was their proposal. I agreed, while I was in the medical center for a time, came home to discover the entire property clearcut, not a tree to be had. I guess I failed to say which house those trees could reach, though mine the only one on the property.

Thankfully no parts missing or damaged because of a chainsaw.

Just realized I don’t use a saw daily and I’m not 25 anymore.
