PTO Shaft recommendation

My shaft got bent, I tried straighten it but it won’t slide in all the way without binding. It takes a big hammer to unstick it and I am tired of doing that every time.

So I am in the market for a new PTO shaft. Need splines on both ends. I see Northern has Braber, but the specs say for 16HP max, i need more than that. Maybe it would work? Any recommendations on where to get a shaft ?

Your dealer should be able to replace just the tubing in your shaft.

If you provide more info on whatever implement the pto shaft came with one of us can point you to where to buy just the shaft. Usually at each end where the shaft enters a casting there is a roll pin to allow the shaft half to come free.

You list a lot of equipment in your 'profile' and ,well, the shaft might not even be for one of them ! I don't assume anymore....

I will look at the shaft closer, it came from a flail mower I bought used years ago.

I was able to find a shaft on Amazon, and another on surplus center for under $100, cut them to my desired length and rock and roll. When I first got my finish mower, i replaced both tubes because they were bent. I was newer to tractors then and didn't search much and only saw complete shafts for $500 at Tractor Supply and didn't look harder. The replacement shafts cost me $100 shipped, plus I had time in taking it apart and back together, then cutting it down to the right length.

looks like one side says TYM? Or TJM? Or TM? The other side of that shows R-44.
LMK if this is enough and where to get a new shaft. Specifically, it’s the narrower of the 2 (one with grease) that I need as it binds when it goes in further.

How do you know the inner one is the bent one?

Why "last option"?

Are they prohibitively expensive?

I've never had to replace one.

Replaced one last year. 47HP. $135. Surprised of the quality. Having proper safety shielding important. Properly adjusted slip clutch saves wear on driveline.

He does not even need a slip clutch. Complete new 35HP shaft is probably close to the cost of one repair tube.

WRT the slip clutch, I’ve never had one, but I think it works when something gets caught in an implement, like a mower, that the clutch will slip instead of damaging the brush hog. Is that correct?

Yes. My flail, rotary cutters, tree cutter, rototillers all have slip clutches.
They do require some knowledge and adjustments. New shafts come with some instructions. Not best to store outside in the weather as the clutch material can rust to the plates.

Thanks, I should probably get the slip clutch one then, I mainly use it for my flail or brush cutter.

Another question on pto shafts- I have another (longer) shaft that has a collar end with 2 ball bearings that push up/down when the collar is pressed/released. The bearings are dirty and rusty. What is the best way to clean these? I can’t seem to find how to take apart the collar either. The shaft is good otherwise.
