Real (stupid) oil question

I was changing the oil on my diesel truck last week and noticed (for the first time) that the bottle states "15 years or 500,000 miles guaranteed". I realize that you should change the oil more that one time--assuming you keep it for 500,000. But should I change it at about 10,000 miles (when the truck tells me to) or could I skip that and reset the oil change at least one time between changes? Just curious what everyone thinks.

For synthetic oil, I usually change it in my Cummins engine every 7,500 miles or annually. The truck isn’t a daily driver, so for me it’s usually annual.

While not a diesel, I change my pickups synthetic about 5,000 miles.

I think my Ford pickup is supposed to go 10,000 miles now.
I always use mobile 1 and change it at 5k.

If you ever have engine problems you will wish you had changed more often, ask me how I know :(, 10,000-mile oil changes are for somebody that wants their vehicle to last only 100,000 miles. Not worth the gamble.

That’s a warranty they offer if you use their oil exclusively. Read the fine print


edit: they aren’t saying the oil is good for 15 yrs/500k miles.

As one who never questions what I read in advertisements or what I read on the Internet, I see no issue with their claim and I’m sure it’s entirely valid in all cases not just in the laboratory.

The guarantee is probably as good as gold so I would not hesitate, not worry and never change my oil again… Just common sense really.

I’m surprised you would even think to bring up such a question!

If your truck is "in tact" I wouldn't go 10k. Too much soot loading. If you have removed the castration devices then 10k isn't a problem at all.

I remember him taking a class on oils and fluids. The engineer teaching the class told them the cleanest motor oil you could buy was the recycled motor oil as it was more clean and filtered then original refined oil was filtered.

I have A ford Taurus for a work beater, I’m nearing 300,000 miles and just add oil when it gets low. Still runs like a top. Oils companies have people brainwashed about all the oil change Bs. My last tdi had 450k on the clock when i got Rid of it. And i hardly Ever changed the oil in that either.

When I bought my first diesel in 2002 (F350 Super Duty 7.3L) I remember the owner's manual stating that the oil change interval was 3,000 miles. Even living in Hawaii at the time, that would mean three oil changes a year! I used to buy regular dino oil, then switched to synthetic, added a bypass oil filtration system which would filter down to something like 1 micron, and played the game of sending oil out for analysis to see how long I could stretch the oil change intervals.

These days I'm still driving a 2002 Super Duty 7.3L but my regimen is much simpler. I use a good synthetic oil and change it every 10,000 miles or so. The truck has close to 177k at the moment and the engine runs so well. I'm sure everything else will fall apart before the engine does.

I haven't looked, but I think recycled oil used to be on the shelf cheap or cheaper then new oil. And of course where ever you have your oil changed or if you recycle your used oil it must go somewhere.
Doing a quick search I see no recycled motor oil for sale.

It used to be that the cost of refining the used oil became prohibitively expensive, and there was more money in new oil vs refining used oil. Safety-Kleen perfected the market and they get paid to take the used oil, and then they resell it. Safety-Kleen collects used oil from thousands of locations across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. I used to purchase their re-refined engine and transmission oils, I remember it had an eagle on the label, but what it was called has left my memory. Just pay attention to the viscosity at high temps when you get it tested. The mighty 7.3 uses HEUI injectors.

SafetyKleen is pretty clear if you disregard the deluge of marketing BS. Re-refining used engine oil produces a Group II base oil that can be blended with other base oils and additive packages just like a Group II obtained by refining crude. I suspect the Group II base oil market is their primary sales channel.

Keep in mind the vast majority of premium engine oils sold today are formulated with a high percentage of Group III base oil and often boosted with a dose of Group IV and V. The exact base oil mix is a secret closely guarded by the formulators.

Group II oils are mainly used in the formulation of industrial, gear, and hydraulic oils.

That was probably true. Way back then. Nowadays the best and most refined are synthetic oils.
