Couple of weeks ago I went to a class on fire service response procedures and investigation considerations for fires and cooking off incidents involving batteries such as used in EV’s and storage banks used by utilities in conjunction with solar and wind. Part of it was a rather in depth dissection of this incident: https://fsri.org/research-update/re...red-lithium-ion-battery-energy-storage-system. Even if not fully involved, the chemicals being released in an overheating cook off situation are extremely toxic. Bottom line was once they are on fire or cooking off (overheated to the point of expelling gasses) you just have to stay back and try to keep the surrounding area from catching. That and if they’re cooking off in an oxygen poor environment do NOT ventilate even if they continue for days on end. And you best be wearing respirators if you’re within 100 yards of it upwind, further if downwind. All the while it’s dumping a smorgasbord of toxic chemicals.
In short, I have no interest whatsoever in battery powered cars, trucks, tractors, or similarly sized equipment as they currently exist. Hybrid: fine IMO. Large vehicles powered solely by batteries currently available are absolutely scary, even from the standpoint of “saving the environment”. Not saying they’ll never be viable, but they aren’t yet.
Someone somewhere has to be making massive sums of money off the EV mandates. If that isn’t the case, the level of stupid is at least a strong contender for one of the most idiotic movements in human history.
All that aside, zooming in a bit on that big chrome rear wheel, it looks like that’s a giant hubcap on a black steel wheel. Hopeful Kubota will make those things in sizes that will fit my L. If I could get some of those chrome wheel covers, hook some curb feelers to the loader subframe, fuzzy dice for the ROPs (we’re a little too old to be putting the wife’s lingerie up there), and swap out the OEM steering wheel for a chrome chain link wheel I could be styling and profiling while I’m out bush hogging, skidding logs, and blading roads. I can already bounce the front end (a little bit with the loader).
Oxygen starvation will stop the flames (i.e. “put out the fire”), which is vitally important to containment, but that doesn’t stop the batteries from continuing to release highly toxic gasses and there is no way to cool the batteries enough to stop them from continuing to cook off until all the fuel is gone. They aren’t technically “burning” because there’s no oxygen necessary so it doesn’t meet the definition of “rapid oxidation”. They will continue the overheat cook off cycle even if they’re completely submerged in a lake/ocean. There is no way to stop that once it starts. It might stop on its own. Might not stop until there’s nothing left. I have to wonder if the tow truck owner/driver knew what kind of chemical meltdown they were putting on their truck.I watched a FD handle an EV fire in a home garage..they hooked up to the flaming vehicle, dragged it out into the driveway, then put this massive blanket on it to starve of Oxygen. All traditional extinguishing agents dont work. After it was out they put it on a flatbed tow truck with the blanket on and took it off. All FD were in full haz mat gear the entire time. The blankets were thousands of dollars each.

A government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth.I doubt it will happen other than on tax payer supported ventures.
The EV craze is past its prime, soon it will have to support itself on its own merit and that will be the end for now.
Yes the one I saw they had fire truck escorts for…..some good that would do lolOxygen starvation will stop the flames (i.e. “put out the fire”), which is vitally important to containment, but that doesn’t stop the batteries from continuing to release highly toxic gasses and there is no way to cool the batteries enough to stop them from continuing to cook off until all the fuel is gone.
