No.

Our few banks have a government guaranteed monopoly here and since the 1990's they don't pay depositors any money and they don't want your business because you have nowhere else to go.

Housing prices are inflated because people started speculating in real estate as interest rates were low and it was the only way to get a return on your money.

Even at $30/hr it's hard to get a $1M mortgage. Heck they can't afford to pay rent anymore.

If the government had any sense they would force banks to pay depositors at least prime rate less a percent. Instead they are trying to encourage more investment in construction so more properties can sit empty while speculators live the dream of getting rich running short term airb&b rentals.
Like a fool, I have been sitting on a significant hunk of CAD cash for 5 years, since the sale of my Nova Scotia Summer home.
All the while hoping for some recovery of the CAD against the USD.
THAT has not happened, and I have finally decided it is time to get off the pot.
The dumbest $$$ thing I have ever done was to buy real property in Canada.

But I can feel good about myself knowing I am paying a carbon tax
Yea, I bet Ole Leo pays his fair share too.......but his carbon footprint is probably a wee bit larger than yours/ours is........

In the middle to late 1960’s I pumped gas at a discount 24 hour station that was the cheapest in our area. Much of that time it was about 30¢ a gallon. A hamburger at the new McDonald’s was 18¢. A 10 oz coke in a returnable bottle was a dime (after you gave the bottle back for 2¢) Compare those things to today and you will see we are not paying more for gas than the good old days. It’s still cheap. So cheap we should stop complaining and go get a cheap burger and a coke for $4, instead. It’s about the same price as a gallon of gas today just like it has always been. Sometimes being old gives you a different view.

I worked for minimum wage at $1.25 per hour, that bought me 4.17 gallons of ethanol free. Today minimum wage in PA is $7.25 per hour and that buys 1.69 gallons of ethanol free. Yes, it is not all about me, some may be having a hard time with the current nonsense.

Simple fix then......Just raise minimum wage to ~$16......Now everyone is happy....

Probably not the dumbest thing you've ever done, but maybe the largest dumb thing you've ever done?

I imagine that you are probably 500 miles from the nearest refinery?
About that. All fuel sold in northern Nevada comes from a refinery in California's Bay Area. 8" pipeline over the Sierra Nevada to a distribution center in the Reno/Sparks area. Which is why I chuckle when I hear someone proclaim that "X" brand of gas is better that "Y"...I can point and say "it all came out of that tank".

I've kept meticulous records all my life. In 1973 I drove my van from my parents farm in northeastern Pennsylvania to Reno, Nevada. Averaged 12.85 mpg on that trip...and total cost for fuel was $90.14. For a cross country trip!

50 years later...this past summer it cost me $130.46 to fill the tank on my current van just once!

But how much were you earning in 1973?

In 1967 I was clearing $43.09 per week. Gas is 10X what it was back then, so I'd need to clear around $430.00 per week now if I would still be working.

I've said for years that FOR THE MOST PART wages and prices have increased, but you need to work nearly the same number of hours for things you buy.
