Tearing down the engine in my l185dt and when I pulled the head there was a mystery ball bearing. No clue where it came from and where it goes nothing obvious figure it goes in an oil passage of some sort.

hmm.. WHERE was it ? On the top of the head, just sitting there ?? Is the oil fill cap there ? Some 'prankster' ?? Only ball bearings I can think of would be a) oil pump relief valve or b) used to plug a passageway
it'll be nice to KNOW where it came from....!!!!

IF it didn't fall onto the piston top from somewhere else when you removed the head....then something is VERY, VERY wrong.
Is it possible it came out of a ratchet, breaker bar, or extension? the socket retainer one is about that size.

Just a thought as I have had a couple come out at a bad time over the years.

I don't think so but it could have gotten on top of the engine and fell in. There was no damage to anything so they weren't inside the engine when it was running. I will just go on with putting the engine back together. Thought it might have been a berry from a tree but its for sure steel

Sometimes those kind of things happen. When I was a lot younger I had a honda 350 that I had to tear down to replace a piston. I had all the parts laid out in order on the bench. When I got the parts and was re-assembling I had an extra internal snap ring and nowhere to put it. It took a little while but it came to me where it came from. I had a master cylinder in a vise I was putting a rebuild kit in and that ring from that went flying and since the kit came with a new one I didn't look for it. It showed up in the honda parts and luckily it was internal and the other ones near that size were external. Also it had rust on it and the others didn't as they were from the gear case.
My son told me those kind of things are called "Jesus clips" because of the swearing that can follow the loss.
