That being said: Please take a picture of the front pinion shaft splines. You say there is "a small amount of wear".

Respectfully, Cowgirl; How do you know what is a small amount of wear?

People here on OTT do, but we need pictures.

If it were my tractor, I'd do the following:

>I"d leave the front driveshaft (and shield) off for the following testing and diagnostics.

>I would not mess with the pinion yet. (There will be play in the pinion shaft, it's normal to a degree).

>I would drive the tractor in 2wd and also 4wd (with the front driveshaft OFF the tractor) and listen for noises. Noises from transmission side, the back side, in 4wd would indicate an issue there. Noises in the front axle in 2wd and 4wd would indicate a problem in the front axle.

>I'd use the loader to lift front axle. Spin it backwards and forwards. Listen for noise. I'd have a friend spin front wheels slowly while I put slight pressure on the center of the pinion shaft with my index finger... to feel anything abmormal thru it such as vibration or bumps.

>I'd DEFINITELY take pictures or video and post it here on OTT if I needed help.
What about the worn splines on the bevel gear shaft... on the propeller shaft the sides are worn on the torque side and the coupler rotates with play
For info the splines on the beveled (pinion) gear have wear and the coupler does not fit firm
I do not have a slide hammer researching I can not find the tool I need as I only can find that tool for trucks..
I would have to order one as no parts houses close..sugestions..

I’ve got to say, I’m impressed with the headway you’re making on this. OTT has a bunch of knowledgeable and helpful folks. Even more impressive is all this is being done remotely, with out the benefit of visual aids. You all are killing it! Keep up the good work.

I suspect you’ll have your Dad’s tractor packing round bales before it’s knee deep around the ring.

If this stuff were easy, anyone could do it. But it not, so that’s why you get to do it. You got this!

Maybe someone like Daren Todd or North Idaho Wolfman can give play by play of how to post a picture from your camera. I'm lucky to be able to take a picture, much less get it on my desktop hard drive and then upload it to here. Not my forte.

And we are so rural I have no access to the internet other than my phone BUT by Dec 6 we are getting fiber optics yahoo!!!! we do have Dish but in the last year the price went from 79.00 to 155.00
With very little income and all the outgoing $$$$ trying hard to get things repaired Kubota here in TN hr repair $150.00 plus parts they said estimate 20hrs..to tear down find the problem then wait for parts
So far this forum is a God send just waiting for Wolfman and all the others as I have a couple of questions on the amount of play when manually rotating the front tires..
Thanks again for all the help and support!!

Fiber! YES!

Dish? No way.

Get your internet fiber with router and then.... buy Roku for $50 dollars. That's not $50 a month. That's once and done.

Pictures:
Take a picture with your phone.
Find out where it's saved on your phone.

On OTT, reply to a thread. Click the "Attach File" icon on the edge, top or bottom part on your screen. It may be a paperclip symbol or similar.

Depending on your phone, pics may be in media or files or other. Search and find the pic you want to post.. click on it. It will take a little time to download.

It will say 100 percent when it's uploaded to OTT. Then click Thumbnail or Full Image. It Doesn't matter at this point, we can see Full Image by clicking on your picture's Thumbnail.

Click on "preview", to make sure that your sending the correct picture! We don't need birthday party pictures. Lol

Submit the post.

Hardest part is finding the picture on your phone. On my Android, it's in "Files".

Good luck. Send it.

I have to admit, I am impressed by you. You are putting a lot of time and energy into fixing this tractor and dealing with life's problems in general. Not whimpering and whining, just doing the best you can and getting things done.

Might want to check out Starlink?
Compare the costs to a fiber hookup and monthly fee.
I am very rural too, and it's been wonderful for us.

Lost my Dad have not worked on the 8540 since i last posted but need to keep trying to get the 4WD fixed..I think the pinion gear and shaft need to be replaced as the couplers will not stay aligned and I think that is where the loud noise is coming from
My question is there a way to change the pinion gear without pulling everything apart
Any help would be extremely appreciated
Thanks

My Miss. rural electric company ran fiber county-wide during covid. They have a lower tier 100M for $59/mo, including a security suite. It's been plenty fast for TV and web surfing.

Spectrum in Tenn was raising my internet for the second time in less than a year. I called to complain and they reduced it to $59/mo for a year. But I live in town and have 2 fiber options in addition to Spectrum cable.

My condolences on the loss of your father. Watching your father die of cancer is an extremely difficult experience to go through. Mine passed that way 3 years ago. Hopefully you can struggle past this hard time and get your tractor fixed and move forward with your life.
