re: Trust me, Kubota is not selling anything that they can source for $500 (or even $2k) for $4K+ retail or anything close.

So SDT you've got actual numbers for what Kubota pays for the parts, something in writing, that can be confirmed ? As I said, I don't know their actual numbers ,but typically a retailer buys at 50% of selling, so the $4K DPF might cost the dealer $2K. Dealer gets it from 'corporate',(2K > 1K)but they purchase from Japan head Office, who gets it from the actual manufacturer($1K > $500 ). That's how a $500 part ends up costing the consumer $4K.

One example of 'markups'. Decades ago I ran 3 radio Shacks, I could order 2 , 1/4" phone jacks. My cost on one was .47, the other 2.99. Both sold for $3.95. Now since both do the same job, guess which one I ordered buy the case ??

"lost work time"?
I do not think that many of us use these small machines for paid "work"
Yes but if you have spring or fall chores to do and you cant use the machine…it’s a problem. Or if you use it for snow removal in the winter and you doNT have it…..

"why would want anyone want to own a tractor that has (or needs) all that crap"?
When you need a new machine (for business), and there is no alternative.

A friend just bought a nearly new Kubota M62 TLB.
Sadly, there was no alternative!
No alternative? Are you serious?

I wasn't aware that one can no longer purchase or own a tractor that still has a "common sense" fuel system. That day may be coming, but it's not here yet.

If only that were true in this industry.

I believe Wolfman's comment is scarcasm.
Oh no it's not, I want one bad.
I'd prefer to get one that's "DEAD"
An B3350HSDC (Cab model) would be best.
I know a few tricks with that model.

I live north of Spokane not far from you. Make an offer and I will sell you my B3350SU. I am thinking of buying the LX4020.
Yea thanks, but I can't do an SU unit, need Mid PTO and I'm really looking for a cab model.
I want it for winter work . ;)

The reformer costs much more than does the DPF and is used on the 3350 and one model of F series mower only.

Trust me, Kubota is not selling anything that they can source for $500 (or even $2k) for $4K+ retail or anything close.
Thongs may be different up there in Indiana, but that kind of net profit is way unreasonable in most places. 500% mark up?

Indiana has different thongs that the rest of the US? 🤔
They bigger or smaller? :ROFLMAO:
Ask Google and you will get lots of answers. Most are in this ballpark:

The short answer: a 66%-100% markup is becoming the industry standard. That gives the shop a 50% profit, which is pretty standard for a retail business.

Now lets look at a simple Kubota example. - rear remote valve section with float for L3560.

Lsts for $1035 at Messicks. Nothing special about that valve - Kubota did not make it - they sourced it from some valve OEM

I can purchase a similar valve made by a top line OEM for $135 retail. That cost includes the distributors 65-100% markup over OEM cost.

In general every hand that touches a part is doubling the cost. In the case of dealership prices it's more than that.

Agreed. Simply not reality.

Been doing such things much too long to believe such nonsense.

Well I have to believe the real numbers that I can confirm. I KNEW my costs while at the 'shack' and knew my costs when I built remote control energy systems 1/2 a lifetime ago.

I'll be relocating to MT within the next few months.

Perhaps I should bring my 2018 3350 along....

I know a few tricks with that model.
With mechanical injection, it can be made to run without the emissions equipment rather easily.

This is taken from the sales blurb for Alldata's Manage Online softwate package. For those that don't know AllData provides the technical service information that is used by a very large percentage of independent garages. It's the technical information. labor, and parts pricing service provider used by the majority of independent businesses. This is the actual industry talking to each other and this particular product is Alldata's tool for helping a shop manage parts markup. Emphasis is mine:

Many automotive business consultants suggest an overall 100% markup on parts in order to achieve an overall 50-55% profit margin. This markup is important to achieve a 30 to 35% net operating profit. Shops that fail to succeed often have net operating profits of less than 15%.

Some shops just double the list price of some of the parts they sell. While that is an effective strategy for a $7 oil filter, it doesn’t work so well for a $400 alternator.

They go on from there to show how you mark the lower ticket items way up and limit the markup on big ticket items to keep customers happy. The goal is to acheive a mix that based on overall total sales volume gives you that ovetall 100% markup number.

Independent operators have to worry about customers going To a competitor eith lower markups. Dealerships that have a monopoly on many parts are not as constrained in how much they can markup those big ticket parts. Hence the sticker shock many customers experience when handed the dealer's invoice.

100%, sure. Hell, we do that on anything south of $1200. As it gets more than that, the increase tapers off as the wholesale price goes up. Different business though.
