Start with the basics and go from there
1). Does it have fuel in the tank?
2) Does the fuel run out of the hose into the fuel injection pump? You can remove the hose to see or crack open the bleed valve on the injection pump. I prefer the hose since it is a bit more flow and is easier to tell if it’s flowing properly.
3) If not there, then where do you get any fuel flow from (into the fuel filter)?
4) If nothing is getting to the filter then loosen the fuel filler cap (don’t remove completely) and blow low compression air into the hose and back into the tank? Be prepared to catch the fuel in something or get it back onto the filter as quickly as you can. It may s to gush out if the clog is blown out of the line or the tank outlet.

Tell us more about what has been going on with the tractor, what did it do and when was the last time it was used? Was this sudden or has it been sitting for months or years?

Thanks for the reply. The tractor had been sitting for about 8 was. I found that the last user (my sonj ran it out of fuel. I knew that I would have to bleed the system. There was evidence of water at the water separator bowl. I drained the tank and I added clean fuel and I started at the water seperator, then the lines to the injector pump, then the injector pump. No joy. I had fuel at the pump intake fitting, but none at the lines going to the injectors. I placed an electric fuel pump in the line leading to the injection pump. I applied fuel under pressure to injector pump. Still no fuel thru the pump. Any ideas. My next thought was clogged injector pump, I shudder at the thought of fiddling with the pump, I know next to nothing about how to rebuild one. Any ideas appreciated.

On the injection pump there is a bleeder valve that is probably where the fuel line attaches. On my small L185 it looks like a couple of hex nuts or bolt heads stacked on top of each other. Hold the lower (larger) one and then loosen the top one a little, don’t need to remove it completely.

Fuel should come out there. You might want to crank the tractor a little bit but I don’t think it is necessary to do that but it might help to get the fuel into the pump. I don’t recall doing that. When no bubbles are present in the leaking valve then close it fairly tightly.

Then put the hand accelerator on high and crack the lines at the injectors (not at the pump). Then pull out the decompression knob and crank engine in 10 to 15 second intervals with a minute or two between the cranking so the starter doesn’t get too hot. Holding the decompression knob will help with the speed of cranking and keeping the starter cool so hold it out until you stop cranking. Eventually fuel should start to drip out of the lines then more fuel with bubbles then eventually the bubbles should go away completely. Tighten the injector line nuts one at a time as the bubbles go away.

When you are done you may have to charge the battery overnight but at least let the starter cool down for 10 to 15 minutes. Then try to start the engine up us the decompression knob so that any excess fuel will be ejected from the cylinder. After a couple of revolutions then push the knob in and start the engine up.

If it starts but is running rough then you can crack each injector nut one at a time and let the engine push any remaining air out. If the engine stumbles more when you crack the line then close it quickly and move to another injector.

if you don’t get fuel to the injectors then there is something wrong with the pump or the lines are clogged. I would recommend removing a line and see if there is anything coming out of the pump BUT hold the larger nut on top of the pump before you try to loosen the nut on the injector line at the pump.

Oh you may want to spend about twice as long as you think you should on the bleeding part. Most people get impatient and then frustrated when it doesn’t seem to start after bleeding since there are still bubbles in the lines.

If it had water in it the rack may be stuck in the injection pump. Remove the small side cover and see if it moves.

If it had water in the injection pump and sat for a length of time and the rack is stuck, you're more than likely going to need a new pump, no rebuild is going to fix it.

Assuming that “8 was” really means ”8 weeks” and the water separator did its job (well) would b encouraging to me that the pump has not been damage. But there is still some concern for the pump.

Was the screen in the separator in good condition and is “8 was” some typo so you can tell us in a time unit that we understand or are you one of the lizard people aliens? 😳
