anyone know how big the 'big,black cloud of death' was when the picture was taken ??
It was all photoshop. Otherwise, the EPA and others would be there. The administration is always where problems are, right.

The Harris-Biden Administration defended their decision to abandon the Ohio and Pennsylvania citizens whose lives were ruined by claiming that the government simply cannot help them. Their official excuse:

“What East Palestine needs is much more expansive than what FEMA can provide. . .”
From Newsweek:

According to a report from The New York Times this week, DeWine's office said it had been told Ohio didn't qualify for FEMA support "in part" because Norfolk Southern was paying some of the cleanup expenses. FEMA also reportedly found that East Palestine didn't qualify for assistance because of the lack of property damage after the derailment.

A White House official who spoke with Fox News Digital Friday morning also defended the decision to not send FEMA relief, saying that the agency wasn't the "best equipped" to support the community.

"What East Palestine needs is much more expansive than what FEMA can provide," the official stated. "FEMA is on the front lines when there is a hurricane or tornado. This situation is different."

It will most likely be the EPA directing the railroad and third party contractors on cleanup requirement. Somebody like safe harbors will be brought in.
As to the water, those folks are going to have to sue the railroad for cleanup. Even then, the data will be hard to prove anything. Exposure to air borne chemical is a time rated exposure and I doubt there is enough data points to support a health issue. Well issues can take decades to show up and surface water will self clean and dilute.
Home prices will drop to worthless. Think Love canal in NY.

I heard an presidential executive order for the rail to upgrade the safety system was fought tooth and nail by the railroads and then the next administration had it over ruled. I can not remember the source of the article.
It is all going to come down to the money and lawyers.

EVERYONE who says 'all clear, no problem' should get THEIR families and live there..in the house and work in the stores..drink the tap or well water too ! NOT staying in a hotel 50 miles away, but at 'ground zero'. IF they can stay there 40 days and 40 nights THEN I'd almost be convinced it's 'all clear, no problem'.

I hear that they are conjuring up more legislation and rules and such to prevent such horrible things from happening.

Just what we need more regulation

and in a few years we'll be griping about the costs of shipping going up some more, then we ask ourselves why that is?

It was supposedly taken by a passenger on a commercial aircraft. The one posted looks too "clean and round" but there are several photos on USAT that show it from different angles out of the window. They show the wing tips of the plane and shadows.
There are like 4 more derailment since this one now? 3? 4? I may have a tinfoil hat but something strange is afoot.

I tend to believe it is just more reporting and making news!
How many trucks flip over on exit and entrance ramps per day that never hit the news ?
Plus a derailment does not mean a spill or death.
Keep the tin hat as you never know !
IMHO: Our (US) rail system sucks. Decent high speed rail should be a norm by now.

Depending on who you watch for news, you’ve already seen the substance coming out of the creek. No tin foil hat required.
The Twin was talking about more derailments.
No doubt about the visible product in the creeks.
IMHO: It is the parts per billion and parts per trillion in the aquifer that will be a problem for generations.
Breath shallow, run fast, and do not ever drink the water in that town.

There are 3 or 4 derailments every day in the USA, but derailments vary greatly in damages caused. A derailment could be quite simple, like a track is switched improperly and a car gets sideways, still considered a derailment.

You are close. The 30 year average is a little over 1,700. I think the numbers are hard to decipher though. It's like firearm fatalities and the way those numbers are twisted.
As said, a derailment could be very simple and not cause headline news. Hitting a vehicle can cause one as well. There are an average of 2,000 of train/ car incidents per year.
That town in Ohio is FUBAR for generations. I would not trust the dirt, water or air for a very very long time. No matter what they say. I'm pretty familiar with the "it'll be fine" line. I used to live near a Cold War rocket engine plant in Gainesville, VA. They started remediation of propellant contamination in 1992 and called it "complete" in 2018. Groundwater use, and soil restrictions are still in place. Vapor barriers still cover several acres.

The site in Gainesville like the many other sites will be pumping and treating ground water for decades and still not make a dent in the level of contaminants.

What a minute ! Wasn't there just a bunch of people complaining that the government was not helping fast enough. Or yelling that they want FEMA's help and MONEY !

Governments produce nothing therefore have no money. It's not their money.
I guess there are some folks yelling. My take is that they do need more help than the state has resources. I wish the feral government would foot the bill with funds from We the People without getting involved. Let the state handle it. The feral government bats 1000 at ducking stuff up when they do.
