"magnesium chloride" ??????
For medical/digestive issues....
Roads/highways....not so much!;)
MUCH better to use Calcium Chloride for roads & highways!!!
That could be correct. I know it’s a chloride solution that isn’t rock salt. It doesn’t appear to be corrosive because nobody’s vehicles rust out around here.

re: Just WHY do they toss millions of tons of SALT onto the roads?

because the vast majority of the people on the roads do not KNOW how to drive, it's that simple.
instead of actually teaching/training people HOW to drive in snow/ice, it's cheaper and easier to toss salt onto the roads.
it also creates a HUGE demand for new vehicles every 4-6 years !
it's also killed a few lakes in Ontario.....
There are other solutions than rock salt for addressing icy roads. I named three in my earlier post.

It's corrosive, but not nearly as bad as sodium chloride.

My “step” as they call it rotted out because of the rubber mat not letting water evaporate. I bought a new “step” and had it Linex’d for $80’
This was on a BX25D. Had to re cut a hole as the new step was a bit different.
I was very concerned about this, figured I'd just take the mat on/off every month or so and ensure its clean/dry, but this is an awesome solution, I'll be adding this to my list of to dos, and hopefully no damage has been done to a 2.5 year old floor (step).

Having grown up in, and spent most of my life in Colorado, I assure you its magnesium chloride that they use - https://www.codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/maintenance-faq - I was shocked that Maine doesn't use this, but does use the LARGE amounts of salt, hell, they give the stuff away if you have a 5-gallon bucket.

Just coming back to this post. Aside from the obligatory jousting over road salt on a "remove rubber mat or not" post, I have decided to remove my rubber mat entirely and do line x or some other similar solution. What however do you do with the holes where the mat clips were? I assume you can leave them open and just line x right over them and let if either fill the holes or drop through?

Yup!
Dat's it!
