Pulling up to any ordinary diesel pump…. I’ve never seen any reference to cetane number of the fuel dispensed. JD specifies cetane number of 40 with 50 preferred. Kubota wants 45 with 50 preferred.
No where is that mentioned at the retail level that I know of. Neither is the ASTM specification mentioned.

So I'm responding to a previous comment I made regarding fuel. I stated it was in the Operator's Manual but it's actually stated in the Workshop Manual. I know I read it somewhere. Bottom pic clearly states ULSD ONLY. This only applies to tractors that have emissions.

ULSD is ULSD. Doesn’t matter if it’s taxed(yellow, on road) or not taxed(red, off road). As maple farmer said, this only applies in North America.

That's stupid. Except for the dye, they are identical.
Until 2007 off-road diesel was still high sulfur. Probably the text stating use on road diesel is left over in some manuals. All diesel with a few exceptions went to ULSD in 2014.

In MD a minimum of 40 cetane and a maximum sulfur content of 15 PPM is specified on the pump just like octane for gasoline and the fuel is clearly labeled ULSD. The ASTM testing procedure is the standard for diesel fuel sold in the USA. I would have to look at a pump to see if it is actually mentioned. I know the gasoline pumps specify the test used for octane.

This has gotten downright silly - if you are buying OTR diesel anywhere in the USA it meets those specifications.

Most of the diesel pumps in my area are all 40min Cetane. Their is only one company that I'm aware of right now that carries 50min Cetane and that company is Southern States. One location is in Harrisonburg, VA and the other is Staunton, VA.

I have 68 hours on my MX6000 and haven’t had a regen yet. A lot of those hours have been rotary cutting at 540 pto RPMs.

Kinda like all the new cars that still have "Unleaded Fuel Only" stickers at the filler neck, and similar notes in their manuals - even though leaded fuel hasn't been available for sale in about 20 years.

I know a people get bent sideways over the color of the fuel, but where I have sourced fuel in my area, if its red in color its LSD. I have not found a location that sells red colored ULSD.

Red dyed diesel here is fuel that no highway tax is paid on. I thought that was pretty consistent throughout the US.

i have had my pickup tank checked once by a state DOT officer to make sure I wasn’t burning off-road fuel. The fine is pretty stiff for that violation. All of the fuel is ULSD now as far as I know with some marine and locomotive exceptions.
