Clutch needed to change gear range with a HST?

I noticed that the clutch is not needed to go to high, mid or low range on my HST. Is this normal or do I have a problem? There was/is no grinding of gears or any kind of noise or resistance. The tractor was running at about 2000 rpm at the time.

Just make sure the HST pedal is in the neutral position before shifting range - the transmission must be fully unloaded for the range change to happen.

With any 'tranny' that has straight cut gears, you need to stop them spinning before you change gears, to prevent that grrrrinding gear damage we've all heard before.
Trannies with 'synchros' in them are easier to shift and of course if you get the 'timing and speed' just right, no need for a clutch with any tranny......

What about changing from 2WD to 4WD? I used to change while 'rolling' (gears 'unloaded') but the manual says the tractor must be stopped. Never had a problem, but don't want one either, so now I come to a stop before changing from 2WD to 4WD & back.

IMO the 2WD to 4WD shift & back, while gears are unloaded, doesn't seem to be an issue. anyone else have any insight on this? B2601 HST here.

Gently rolling (gears unloaded) changing is no problem.

No problem there, I always have my foot off the HST pedal when I change ranges.
