Now that the Kubota 1800S is in service, it's time to unload its predecessor.

This is a 1997 machine that we got with the house when we bought it 4 years ago. 18.5HP Kohler twin, Hydro-Gear transaxle, 46-inch deck. It runs great since I replaced the magnetos last spring, and looks good - all original and in nice shape. Been stored inside its entire life. Probably never been rained on. No hour meter, but it probably has way less than 1000 hours on it. My vision was to freshen it up, and sell it as "ready to work". Was thinking of asking $600 for it, which is about average.

All three belts were shot on this thing. I ordered them this morning ($54), including Aramid ground drive and deck drive belts. Fixed a tiny leak in the (tubeless) RF tire with a plug.

Big problem is that the mower deck has some rot. Couple of 4 square-inch rust holes through it on the front, and the rust is also about to come through the top surface in a couple of places. All three spindles are good, but the tensioner pulley has bad bearings. I could weld patches over the rot, I guess, but it would feel like polishing a turd. The plastic grass deflector is in bad shape, too ($60).

I'll go ahead and change the transaxle fluid and filter. It gets regular 10W-40 motor oil. And, change the fuel filter. I had changed the engine oil and filter last spring.

There's a "pick 'n' pull" junkyard about an hour from where I live that has a large garden tractor section. I think I'll make a quick run through there to see what they have before I give up on the mower deck. You never know...

If I can't find a decent deck for it for less than $100, I'll just sell it as a good runner needing a deck, and throw the existing deck in on the deal as a freebie. I might see if I can find that tensioner pulley at Tractor Supply, so at least it's a mowing machine, rust holes notwithstanding. Would probably last another season or two before it falls apart...I think I saw one of those pulleys on eBay for $14.

Disappointed that I can't promote this machine like I wanted to, but I'm very glad that we got it superseded!
And, so is the wife. She hated that Craftsman. It really was an uncomfortable turd to drive. And loud. And, it cut very unevenly.

No comparison to the 1800S!

I'm kind of an odd duck.
After four years of free use I would push it the end of the drive with a free sign.

'free' ? He bought the mower and got the HOUSE 'free''... ;)

quik deck fix.... pop rivet patches on the inside of the deck . It's quick and easy, makes rider useful at a good price. cut and weld can open a can of worms..chasing down WHERE good tin is.....
as for better decks... check others that fit, usually Poulan Pro, AYP, Husqvarna... I think they're all the same. Lots of common parts, so a cheap donor deck could get you everything.

Even if you put $300 into it, sell for $500, you've made $200 profit and had a fun project.

This machine is probably one of the nicest all-original Craftsman garden tractors on the planet:

Somebody is going to really want this thing!

And, yup, that's The Buff' in the background, my daily driver, a HEAVILY upgraded M880. Soon, I'll start another Off-Topic posting on your daily drivers.

Here's the deck damage:
1663105797744.jpeg
Nasty, huh?
I'd probably think about pop-riveting...if it wasn't near one of the front supports. And, ya, I have understood that these mowers were made by AYP for a range of sellers.

There are probably 100 of these mower decks laying around unused within 10 miles of my house...

WOW ,she's a NICE lookin ride !!
Should be possible to find a good deck, maybe 2-3 donors for the right 'replacement tin' sections.
Maybe turn the deck refurb into a 'winter project', then sell as a GREAT running rider. Could get 1000 or more knowing how screwy the economy is !

The tractor (without deck) would bring at most $75-$125 here. With a good deck, and really clean, $500-$600 at most. Buying/selling lawn equipment was my livelihood for a year or two.

If you can find a cheap deck for it that's not rusted, it might be worthwhile. If not, you have some scrapiron. Every once in a while I can advertise something like that and find someone who wants one without a cutting deck, so that the kid can learn to drive with it or whatever. But generally speaking, I've got to sit on them for a good while in the meantime which means it's always in the way until someone buys it. They are not particularly sought after, but the name sells them.

at one point I had 48 mowers for sale at one time. Of those, I had one craftsman with a rusted deck, which I advertised NEEDING a deck, and also had a 214 John Deere also with a rusty deck and advertised as such. Had both of them listed at $250 each. I sold the Craftsman for $225 and the deere set around a while until an older gentleman came to look at a zero turn, said he had a 214 when he was younger and wanted to take that one home to let the grandkids learn to drive a stick shift before he put em in a car. Offered me $2400 for the zero turn and the Deere, and I got the satisfaction that at least someone would get some kind of use out of it before it goes to the scrapyard. I kinda miss doing that stuff because of the stories that people tell.

I would just advertise the tractor as being super clean for a 97 and has a deck that needs repairs to be functional. There are quite a few people out there that might just want it for pulling trailers, snow removal, kids/adults enjoyment, there's many uses for the tractor without the deck.

I don't really think it's worth putting much time into the deck unless you find a replacement. Old Craftsman tractors just aren't going to bring a premium price!

If someone’s got a decent deck or just put money into repairing theirs but the tractor is toast THEY will be interested in your tractor for sure. It’s in great shape.
I literally just did this My tractor runs great (26hp Koehler) but the deck was trashed. What I noticed on the Craftsman parts site was some replacement decks (deck only) are north of $800 and some are as little as $350. I also found that my Craftsman lawn tractor is essentially a rebadged Husqvarna. Mine is a little younger than yours.

I elected to get mine re-welded by a local for $150 and replaced one spindle. Its running great!

As others said, you will have to put some work in to flog it off - at least some research. It may or may not be worth your time and it may take a while to find a new home but there’s plenty of peeps out there that would use a little tractor like that with a cart for their yard work or even taking the trash cans down - we have to take ours a half mile away.

Thanks guys, for your suggestions.
I made it to the pick 'n' pull today, and there was nothing there for me. Lots of 14-17HP Craftsman junk, all with 42" decks. A few of those decks were in REALLY nice shape. Reminds me of a favorite Bill Mauldin cartoon:
1663206555905.jpeg

I bumped into a guy who was salvaging a Hydro-Gear transaxle, and I asked him if he knew of any other large lawnmower junkyards. He told me of one about 30 miles from here - hope to get there tomorrow for a looksee.

I did see one Kubota today, an old T1700. The thing that grabbed me is that the headlight assembly looks EXACTLY like the one I need for my G1800. Hood is very close in shape also. The two tractors WERE produced concurrently. Thing is, the T1700s headlight assembly was....smashed.

Garden tractor market around here has always been pretty hot, for the right stuff. [Not sure Craftsman truly fits that bill.] One thing nice about mine is that is has a very beefy HST compared to most others.
[Hydro-Gear 210]

My son dealt vintage Wheel Horses for many years. The annual national Wheel Horse show takes place in York county, PA, about 80 miles away. There are LOTS of garden tractor pulls around here (several every Summer weekend), and a couple of local sanctioning bodies. We built a tractor once for the Super 12 class, set up for single-cylinder 12hp Kohlers. Everybody was running the 14hp block, because it's the same as a 12hp, but with a bigger bore. 1" carb bore. Anything goes with porting. Ours was a Wheel Horse 953 (1963). We stood the steering column up more vertical to gain room on the frame to shift the engine front-to-back to balance it for the track. Custom front axle to rake it. Cut rear tires. Here's a pic:
1663208423088.jpeg

That tall lever on the tractor's left side is a hand clutch. Lets the driver fine-tune the clutch (belt) slip to get it moving in heavier classes, and then the leverage lets him manually put some extra tension on the belt at the end of the track.

We never got serious enough with it to actually win any money, but it was loads of fun. In fun pulls, we'd register that thing in every class between 600 lbs and 1200 lbs with a whole pickup load of iron on-hand to hang on it. One time, my son won every one of those 7 weight classes with the same tractor.

I love the old wheel horse tractors, I bought a very nice older model when I moved in here 25 years ago. It was in great shape and was the real WheelHorse.

My buddy has a craftsman very similar to yours that he just inherited from his father. I know he told me it's from the 90s and when I looked at it a couple weeks ago I was very surprised at how nice it looked.. one of the last of the nice heavy duty garden tractors. He's been using it for years to do all the things I posted earlier..

It's one I would like to get my hands on.. I love old garden tractors!

This one was well used on the family farm long before I was born. I grew up mowing around the farm on it, now we just use it around the yard. (Have 2 of the 224s)

Also have one of these to haul back from my parents house next time I go back up there

along with a 2n to bring down here too and bring back to life.

Used the white as a kid to mow at the house and the cemetery across the road. The 2n my great grandpa bought new, but I’ve never seen it run, dad got it when I was 3 and it’s just been sitting in his shed

I caught that too, I guess maybe he wasn't trying to sell to us . Lol

I think my sales pitch was better!

What a coincidence.. my dad bought this same exact tractor back in the earlier 70s and probably about that year. That tractor was so cool, and powerful! Hydrostatic, hydraulic deck lift and front hydraulics. As a young kid I was amazed that it even had a cigarette lighter on it. Seems like it had power steering but not sure. Use to race my neighbor that had just purchased a new 16-18hp Sears, shove that hydro stick forward and the old deer would stand straight up.. remember as a kid! I think I was 12 or 13, thought I was younger. I guess they probably made this model for a few years.

Is this yours hagrid?

My dad's. It is relegated to historical fondness now that the tiniest of all Kubotas roams the estate.

42" deck was very common..better to have a great 42" deck than a rotten 46", and easier to sell !
around here ANY rider that'll cut grass gets $600..few and far between too.
