Hey guys, new to the forum. I have a f2560 with a d1105 in it. It has 11 hundred hours. I bought it at an auction and it had a moderate knock/ clatter noise. I pulled the motor and did rod bearings and piston rings. Everything looked OK except for medium wear on rod bearing 1. I put it back together and the same noise is happening. I stupidly didn't pull the lifters or cam when I had the motor out. The motor runs and starts perfectly except for the noise. It sounds more top end rather than bottom. I triple checked my valve adjustment but noticed when I run it with the valve cover off, it sprays small droplets of oil out of both the intake and exhaust lifter areas (where the pushrods come up) on cylinder 3 ( closest to the flywheel) . It also smokes a little when reving it up from the same area. What do you guys think? Lifters?
Cam?

Another thing is if I take the muffler off it seems to go away, but maybe that's because I just can't hear it anymore from the noise 😄
Could an exhaust leak cause a noise like that?
It almost sounds like someone is hitting the side of the block with a ball peen hammer
If you PM me your email I can send a video of the noise

Put the video on YouTube and share the link here? That's how I've seen a lot of folks do it here.

I've had an exhaust leak on a gas engine sound like a lifter tapping. I'd think a diesel would too.
Yeah. Today I cleaned off the manifold and head, replaced the gasket and covered in copper gasket maker, and did the same with the muffler. Nothing changed. I'm thinking it's not an exhaust leak. Maybe injectors? I'm pretty sure it's on cylinder 3 because when I Crack the injector line it quietes way down and when I do it to 2 and 1 it doesn't. I also can take a screw driver and put it against the injector and I can hear it faintly on 3 but not 2 or 1. I might have the injectors tested at a deisel shop... also going to try draining and running some new fuel through it.

Take the Injectors to a pump shop and get them tested. Better safe then sorry. A bad Injecror could torch that cylinder.

I know the injector isn't stuck because it runs to good. Could a injector still cause a noise even though it isn't stuck?
Also, it puffs more black smoke than my old d1105 when you Rev it. Could that have something to do with it?
I wish I could post videos on here

Being stuck doesn't mean it's not over fueling that cylinder. There is also a possibility someone inadvertently turned the barrel in the injection pump taking the lines off, which could throw that cylinder a little out of whack.

Injectors? It's only 7 bucks per injector to test them at my local injection service place. I will do that
Heck of it's that cheap, I'd see what they want to bench the pump and take it all in. If nothing else you know where you stand with the fuel system.

Ok. I am also going to run fresh diesel through it to make sure. It's got 5 year old ag diesel in it right now.

Wouldn't hurt to get a decent fuel additive as well, get some extra cleaning action and lubrication through it.

When you say turned the barrel, what do you mean by that?

Did you shake the muffler while you had it off to see if a baffle has broken loose in it?
