2001 BX2200 won't turn over... relay (re-)wiring question

One last thing, since the wife is busy....

You can run a wire straight from the green wire to the starter's small post (where the black wire was before) and eliminate the relay completely.

If you want to check the safety switches, leave the green connected and check for battery voltage in and out of both switches.

But, you still don't know what wire down by the starter is the wire that comes from the ignition switch, through both sets of safety switches!

Maybe it is that black wire. Does it have a white stripe on it?
Thanks. I only saw black on that wire so I still have no idea what it is or does. The relay is only needed for after I replace those safety switches. I'd rather just run it for that one job as is (wires cleaned up of course) then when they arrive, change the switches and pray that it works. There is still one stray wire though the way it is set up now.

I don't know about you guys, but I am anxious to know if this beast will start with a charged battery !

You both are to be commended for your patience.

Well done fellas.

Check your voltage AT the battery. The whole reason for the "low voltage start relay" modification is that there becomes too much resistance through the safety switches and you do not get enough voltage to the starter solenoid. 9 volts may be too low even for the added relay. The 9 volts read is probably the result of that high resistance, not a dead battery.

yup thx I was thinking the same thing however the battery charger (a 2A for my motorcycles...) does show it's charging and I will leave it overnight. The battery is new. I had originally installed the relay and resolved That issue for almost a decade until this happened. So yes I need to have that relay for the tractor to start properly. That said, I have emailed requesting whatever safety switches I need and I intend on replacing them - I only see 2 PTO and Neutral and despite the diagram saying there's one for the seat, there is not on this 2001 tractor. I sent the serial number for them to confirm.

It will need a relay. The real question is, provided it is wired right for the relay, whether I can get and install the safety switches and if that will resolve the issue. Thanks! I like the positive vibes.

My BX22 of the same year only has the two. No seat switch. Good luck with neutral safety switch. I have cleaned crap away from it and it looks like a bugger to replace

I deleted that last message of mine. I found where the white wires you have connected needs to go. Leave them connected.

Whatever you can do to charge that battery up, do it. No need to be in a hurry for me. If you want to leave the smaller charger on overnight, that should work.

Here is what your final wiring needs to be if you want to bypass the safety switches.

Thanks again. Just wondering... I am not sure I have the wiring as it should be to use the relay after the switches I will order are installed. I will find out in the morning if I can get them this week and thus replace them on the weekend.

The relay will work if you can find out which wire is coming from the safety switches.

Wiring it directly to the ignition switch's green wire will bypass the safety switches.

I wouldn't spend any money on buying the safety switches until you can determine which wire it is that is needed to connect to the starter and/or relay.

I will clean up the wires do the little job then pull the wheels and test continuity to both switches. I still wonder about the connection at the key to that green wire. Will check that further too as it was suspect as soon as I noticed it came out so easily. Not sure how to address that issue aside from changing the entire connector... pita that.

You could cut the wires on either side of the plug and butt connect them together or use a male/female spade connector. Using a spade connector would allow you to hook directly to the relay or straight to the starter until you track down the wiring through the switches.

Thx. Did what I could. Doing the job the later, the wheels come off and I'll hopefully find the issue. How do the wires go ba

That looks good. Did your battery charge up enough to start it today?

CHANGED THIS RESPONSE: Yes It charged up overnight HOWEVER I had to hot wire it... - ran the machine until just now; lunch, work and a little more then depending on time I'll pull the wheels and check or need to delay that until Friday or the weekend. Just wondering if I do find the issue what wires need to be swapped where ... ;-)... Thanks again So Much!

- SORRY I misread and answered wrong. The battery charges but I did NOT KEY START IT. I jumped it with the red wire.

Once you get all of the switches figured out, you'll need to see which wire down by the starter is the correct wire.

All you have left down there is the black wire.

Have you pulled the ribbed plastic off of the battery cable going to the starter to see if there is something hiding behind there?

Hi,
I just finished all the work and put it away. Need to eat then will have a look or will check early in the morning but have to leave by 9:30 a.m. Gone after that until Friday and will either check then or during the weekend. I was thinking of picking up the switches as I can pass by the dealer and they have them in stock. If I don't open / need them, I can return them. Don't know about that black wire yet. I had the starter out there is only what we see the white one from the back and the connector next to the battery. Maybe I'm not following you. thx!

Not the white plug, but the black plastic that is wrapped around the battery cable going to the starter.

Remove part of that plastic and see if there is a wire hiding behind it.

thanks; so I checked with the meter, spare switches, even a new key assembly (for testing purposes) last night and this morning and there is power on that green wire at the ignition and getting to the safety switches when I turn the key. I took off that cover as requested and there's nothing there. I also connected the switch with 4 jumpers to be sure the contacts were connecting to the keyed switch. Since I'm doing this alone, I wanted to take a moment to thank the guy who invented the alligator clip... sorry for the lousy pics but I just wanted the reader to get the idea.

Maybe I am dense, but do you know what terminal/connecting points on the relay/socket are connected to the contacts, and which are connected to the operating coil?

I have the impression you are just shooting in the dark, rather than doing logical troubleshooting.

You should be able to activate the relay manually, and see if the starter turns. You even should be able to activate the starter solenoid manually directly, and see if the starter works.

Not rocket science...but my head is spinning trying to follow the logic of what you are trying to do.

A weakness on my part I guess...
